Car tax

I read in one of my car mags (performance cars) that from October when the actual tax disc is being discontinued by DVLA, that an offshoot of that legislation is that any car being bought/sold has to be re-taxed by the buyer and the remaining tax left on the disc reclaimed back by the seller. In other words once you have handed over your hard earned the car is untaxed. How do you get it home? Depending how long it takes the original owner to send off the log book and then for DVLA to issue the new one so that the new owner is registered as such and can then tax it could mean the car you bought could be sitting unusable and illegal if on a public road for a month or so!! Beggars believe. What do you guys think?

you will still get the green slip from the log book just go to post office to retax it
also i thought that when you sell the car the tax was lost and could not be reclaimed and new owner had to retax it similar to the French system

If you sell it on the 1st of the month the seller will forfeit that month's tax, you need to sell it on the last day to get your money's worth,

On a lot of newish cars the tax is so low it ain't going to make much difference missing a month.

There is no road tax in the UK either, it's vehicle tax or vehicle excise duty.

Except that it does. Frequently. And they stick their fingers in their ears and refuse to admit it, and blame you, even when it's blatantly obvious that they have screwed up. I've already fallen foul of the new insurance regs, they are trying to prosecute me for not insuring a vehicle which was stolen, recovered and scrapped by my insurance company over a year ago!

Thanks rbt for that link. Unfortunately you cannot win with the nerds so it is best to know what is what and go from there. Mind you the car mag must have known that info on that link existed and like to print scare mongering stuff just to get a response. Mind you, I have not seen any where else these changes being advertised for the general public i.e the papers or the government info adverts so is this lack of info done deliberately I wonder?!

... and of course the fact that no discs will be issued means that none will be printed, thus saving the guvmint a shedload of money in printing, distribution and admin costs, which will be passed on to Joseph Q. Driver as a reduction, won't it. Er, no.
As to the first day/ last day issue, you'd imagine that in this day and age, and bearing in mind that the MOT system can already do it, it wouldn't be TOO difficult for them to have a system that allows taxing for a calendar year, rather than the nearest month end.
Oh no, that would mean using a fair system (again)

that is the most stupid thing i have ever heard, what does it achieve? i just cant see any benefit. all that will end up happening is a load of people driving around thier lovely new cars without tax.

on the other hand getting rid of tax disks makes sense, no real piont in them now.

True. They'll just continue copying number plates instead, giving them a vehicle that has 'tax', 'MOT', and 'insurance'.
