well I certainly wouldn't pay for someone to put a bung in a low pressure gas pipe when I can weld work on high pressure 3000psi fittings and pipes no problems I might have to pay someone to put my regulators on my oxy acetylene bottles just in case

I think you will find its a load of old tosh, anyone can fit their own boiler, cooker, gas fire or any other gas appliance. What they cant do is work on other peoples without the relevant qualifications, there are thousands of unqualified old boy plumbers out there with many years of experience that fit whole systems , they get know nothing spotty nippers in with tickets coming out of their ears to put the gas test on and sign off their work. A person has to be deemed competent to work on gas, in their own home or elsewhere, they also have to belong to a class of persons entitled to work on gas (be gas safe registered) if they wish to do it as a job, employed or otherwise

Competence is defined as being ACS qualified

There are no grey areas or anything, it's all black and white and in law
You can only self certify as well, I don't issue a ticket unless I've done the work

Yes I accept there are those who will do it, and do it correctly and safely but as appliances become more complicated this is more difficult, changing a thermocouple or even a gas valve on a 25 year old appliance is as far away from doing it on a modern appliance as you can get

It's like comparing stick welding some rusty farm gates to tig welding titanium in an aircraft engine, the kit needed and the skill level are poles apart

I can fix me own boilers as long as parts available only got my mate in to fit new boiler in order to get 7 year warranty on it I piped the rest up and to a better standard that most plumbers do . in copper not plastic crap

Extracts below from HSE Blurb, as long as you are competent you can carry out your own work. Qualified is only a piece of paper.

Work in relation to a gas fitting
51 For the purposes of these Regulations, ‘work’ includes do-it-yourself activities,
work undertaken as a favour for friends and relatives, and work for which there is
no expectation of reward or gain, eg voluntary activity for charities. This means that
anyone carrying out such work must have the necessary competence, as required
by regulation 3(1). However, membership of an HSE approved class of persons
(under regulation 3(3)) is required only by businesses carrying out gas fitting work.

As required in 3 (1) ( no qualifications needed just competence)

(1) No person shall carry out any work in relation to a gas fitting or gas
storage vessel unless he is competent to do so.


As required in 3 (3) ( can employ any amount of numptys and sign off their work)

(3) Without prejudice to the generality of paragraphs (1) and (2) above and
subject to paragraph (4) below, no employer shall allow any of his employees to
carry out any work in relation to a gas fitting or service pipework and no selfemployed
person shall carry out any such work, unless the employer or selfemployed
person, as the case may be, is a member of a class of persons approved
for the time being by the Health and Safety Executive for the purposes of this
paragraph.
