Can you ever have enough tools?

You lot are rank bloody amateurs, GET_A_GRIP lads. You need to dispose of tools properly. Just recently I started listing tools in the for sales section, I had a 300mm digi caliper there that I let go for not a lot of money, Because I reasoned as I hadn't used it in (literally) years I let it go. Instant regret, but not to worry, I bought another today. In fact, today I bought a whole raft of tooling from a toolmaker who is retiring, more than I could use in a lifetime really, but I will try:-) So you sell a tool for a tenner because you want to downsize and then immediately replace it with a more expensive one. Can't go wrong, can it?

Just so you know- we’re all here to help when you need to offload those expensive tools cheaply in order to make more room…

I spent a lot of time last year getting rid of "stuff" that was no use to me.

Sold some, gave some away, scrapped some, and I now have a workshop that's easy to keep tidy and is more productive than it's ever been. Work benches are usable because they're not covered with "stuff" that I don't use, and every tool I need is stored in a logical and sensible place where I can get to it without thinking, and without having to wade through piles of junk.

Given the "why wouldn't you have seven cordless drills???" type of mentality that's prevalent on this forum, it baffles me that some posters seem proud of the fact that they waste money on tools that they don't need and will in all likelihood never use, so my answer to the op is a resounding yes.

Wait till they forget to keep a small charge in the batteries and suddenly discover a new battery is four times what they paid for the original battery tool.

At a previous Mens Shed group we must have had a dozen or more multi tool sets that hadn't been charged for ten or more years after the owners retired into ill health & died . One particular bit of kit was a lovely pristine early Black & Decker set of three or four tools and two batteries in a quality case like the one we gave to my brother on his 60 th birthday back in 2005 .
He used it almost daily till his demise in 2018 .. The vultures ( supposedly his friends ) descended and stripped his mancupboard bare in a few hours , handing over just under £50 for everything they took.

Have you head room for an over croft type shelf to store long stuff and anything else that will fit the gap that still give you head room clearance ?

I do have some storage spanning overhead space. Also an overhead spot for longer pieces. Can't really add owt else in that regard now though without blocking lighting.

I once had the use of a partitioned off area of an already small motor service garage. It was long but thin, maybe 7' wide, luxury compared to you but as you know once its filled with stuff its tight. Do you do that dance thing that involves just enough movement to get to where you need to be without whacking arm or leg on something on the way? I beat myself up for a while before becoming economic with my movements.

I've actually.managed to make it, (did have to cut a curve out in one benchtop to do it though), so that I don't get caught on stuff anymore.

I've been spending a bit of time of late organising the workshop. It's only 5' wide, so I need to be creative with its layout. I've added a bit of extra shelving/storage where I could, made a spot where I can swap around & site the current benchtop machine in use, etc.

After months of boxing up and condensing down gear onto shelves I thought I had finally got everything away and organised. I was then given the complete contents of another workshop

After years of buying any taps and dies I saw once all collected in one place I was shocked at how many we have, its one hell of a task to bring myself to sort them out!
But never been stuck for a tap I have even been known to lend a few out top local companies in dire need

a few years ago a neighbour was getting shot of the garage items as they had bought a new house and hed left a bit late

i went over and pointed out quite a few bits that would be worth good money and not to tip so they did keep a bit after that and facebooked it but some of the small stuff angle grinders worth 10er and 15 quid stuff still got skiped but as he said hes not got the time to flog it all

Years ago I went to a ‘Car Meet’ and got chatting to a bloke who ran the local ‘Car Club’. It was like a Facebook page which put me off straight away.
Anyway he sold it to me on the basis of many members had specialist tools which could be borrowed to save everybody having to buy them.
I have a fairly good array of tools, but every now and again, drop into the hole of having to buy something for a one off job and then try and sell it again.
Anyway this ‘Car Club’ seemed to consist of lots of people without tools who wanted to borrow mine and could I come with the tools to give a hand with the job.
Never again. So I still have loads of tools and treasure all of them.

Communist knife and fork owner wishes to share with pork pie owner. Been there, in a manner of, not similar but same outcome. I collected a motley assortment of loaner tools for those who ask. Involvement now excepting those held dear is encouragement from the chair while drinking their beer if they are using my tools.

Problem is I buy them and the Son boroughs them, or one or two to split up the package knowing he took the ones you need when that emergency comes while telling you that you buy way to much stuff!

Yeah, it's odd how those tool clubs work.
However, if I knew someone locally with a lift or a pit, I'd have no problem with paying them for the use of it, many wouldn't even think of that.

Put six or more 30 Watt LED White Light Floods in strategic places plugged in on 3 amp fused square pin plugs into double gang switched sockets. So when one fails switch it off , unplug unscrew and fit a new plugged up one in a matter of minutes with out faffing about trying to rewire above your head etc,.

I've just orderd another ten for £27 Ali express or Temu ( First reorder in five years )

I used joist hangers let in top the brick work ( small angle grinder ) and two 150mm x 50mm joist timbers then over laid that with an 8x 4 foot 19mm thick marine ply sheet There must be 4 hundred weight or more laying on it .

On the over croft shelf I've used a lot of drain pipe and old rain / soil vents & stainless steel flue pipes to one side to make a simple rack for storing long things like rods tubes etc .
The shelf is four foot wide , I have several feet each side so I've been able to put up much longer things including garden tools & 2 mtr drain clearing rods. 3 mtr length of wood & metal, I've also added two four foot long LED strip lights so I can work in the mancupboard along the LED floods during darkness.

I also have a maintained LED white emergency light unit by the door that comes on if the mains trips , so I'm not left in the dark in a dangerous situation.

Undoing the electric roller door from the inside during a power cut is a different kettle of fish but I managed it twice during the five days of power cuts we had earlier this year .

Sell or better still , hire them for sensible cash in advance & give half back when they return the item in good clean condition . Strange how few want to borrow my stuff on those terms these days but those who do have now become good friends.

With an option to buy another 34 acres of farmland/fields surrounding the house/yard, begs another question how many horses (24??) do you run for the wife/family???

Strikes me it's not the tools that are the problem more the 4 legged creatures...... Plus vets bills..........
