We have a few gated roads round here. Our drive an old railway line isnt a road. But if you look at a map and you are really really thick one might think it the quickest way to the next hamlet. There's a gated road near us which snakes through a farm yard, people have been known to try and drive through as an alternative route.![]()
Occur with all emergency services. My ex is a midwife - first community call out she needed an ambulance to get mum to be to hospital ASAP. If she had loaded up her in her car, she could have been there 10mins tops at that time of night/morning.We have a few gated roads round here. Our drive an old railway line isnt a road. One night I was out along the end next to the next hamlet looking for foxy. Sees some lights coming along, through three gates to where there is no track left only grass……a Police Ford Ranger, I enquired where they were trying to get too….The next hamlet he says, but we are not from round here! God help us if its an emergency!
Think thats the same everywhere to be honest, and as ambulance, police and fire stations get bigger and more centralised less local knowledge. We have surprisingly few emergency service people on duty over night, so they have to cover a massive area, especially up in N. Yorks.
Should bill idiots like that for the service, and I include the yacht fraternity who call for a lifeboat tow truck in that too, sails work even when the engine doesnt!Having been called out to rescue the same kite surfer 3 times in a day- yes I can believe some people can be that thick
We cut his lines the last time for “our safety” on suggestion from the coppers who’d also turned up to have a word when he made it ashore. Turned out he was teaching himself and didn’t want to pay for training at the kite surfing school about 5 mile down the coast. Kept dropping his kite and couldn’t get it up againShould bill idiots like that for the service, and I include the yacht fraternity who call for a lifeboat tow truck in that too, sails work even when the engine doesnt!
Self learning is one thing, but stupidity another, a kite buggy might have made more sense. I leant to kite surf in Cuba, with an instructor in a very safe location, you could wade out chest deep for nearly 1/2 a mile. Even in perfect conditions it was easy to get in a mess. Good fun though when you are bored on holiday! We cut his lines the last time for “our safety” on suggestion from the coppers who’d also turned up to have a word when he made it ashore. there is a place in Orkney called "Twatt" (settle down now!!) there is also a Twatt in Shetland, ambulances have been know to get sent to the wrong one! its only 100 miles by sea...Think thats the same everywhere to be honest, and as ambulance, police and fire stations get bigger and more centralised less local knowledge.
