Ron speaking from the terms of a simple machine.
As rightly said above you get constant voltage power sources and constant current ones.
Mig is CV. You set the voltage and with in 0.5 of a volt it doesn’t change.
The current does change and is a by product of voltage and wire speed.
The voltage is applied to the wire when you pull the trigger. As soon as you join the circuit you get current which is generated by both the voltage and the wire speed. One has more of an influence over the other regarding the changes of the current which is the wire speed. Turn it up and the current goes up.
Stick out absolutely has a huge effect on current generated. Arguing that fact is like arguing the world is round. A 10mm stick out is going to draw a lot more current than a 20mm stick out all other settings been exactly the same. In turn with that a 10mm stick out is going to penetrate substantially deeper too than 20mm stick out. Change the wire size to one size bigger and leave all your settings the same the current generated will go up.
