Yep - pretty sure they do it on the wheels. Dads old one definitely had two blade speeds set by the belt position described as one for softwood and the other for hard wood in the instructions.

That won't be enough, many bandsaws have 2 blade speeds but the speed for metal is far below the speed for cutting timber. I've seen a conversion where someone put in a second motor and a reduction pulley from that to the first. It could be used for cutting either wood or metal by fitting the appropriate blade and powering whichever motor you needed. The second motor was left to free-wheel.
