I'd be inclined to SORN it during Winter. When I retire I'm seriously thinking of getting a Moggy Thou Traveller or a Riley 1.5, tax free and classic car insurance.

I was chatting to our local post office owner who is into cars.

He pointed out some interesting facts.

One of them being that a friend of his worked at a petrol station 20+ yrs ago while at Uni and correlation between minimum wage and petrol cost is the same now as it was then.

So relatively speaking nothing has actually changed.

they seem to have clamped down on classic cover now
you have to have another car daily drive to get classic on a second car
i was on classic for my old Volvo 240se wagon when i had two cars sold the other started just using the volvo sorry no classic policy so back to a old rover 45 diesel but 50/60mpg in the real world

yes that's the way it seems now and i went through the books/mags trying to get it on classic insurance as a only car with limited mileage

it can be your only car but you can't use it on classic cover as a every day drive seems you have to have a daily driver insured and a classic as a second cars so you cant win either way i was paying £89 for the Volvo fully comp
on classic went up to £350 ish but my postcode adds another £200 on but we are in the good bit if i put in a rural postcode i can lose £200 off the price
total rip off

Another twist.

If your car is taxed it has to be insured, even though it may be laid up.

So in order to save insuring your car you'll have to surrender the tax disc and SORN it, even though you don't actually pay any tax. I wonder how many Classic Car owners bother to do this?

im sure you can declare sorn even if it's still taxed but yes you need to have continuous insurance or you get a fine through the post too much big brother

Apart from public transport getting ever more expensive and the big push to move industrial areas to estates away from housing meaning a lot more people have no choice but to travel a long way for a job you mean?

i despise putting any fuel in my car, but boycotting the petrol stations only shoots myself in the foot, the government has everyone by the balls and they know it, dont get me started with them 20% vat, the French/Egyptians would be blockading or rioting.....

I didn't have that trouble, I SORNED the Volvo for a couple of months after the VED expired to get some of the winter fuel allowance back. I then applied for a tax disc and it arrived OK.

Over here we pay an extra 5p+ per litre than the UK just for the cost of transporting it over here, its only about 70 odd miles over the water !

French TVA was 19.2% until recently when I THINK it went up to 19.4%. Their government as yet don't take as much duty as ours does.

road tax here is pure ******y.
rate is proportional to cc's,last car i had was 1300 euros a year.
tax is a little less on fuel,but if you drive 500 miles a year,taxing fuel would be more desirable

When we got to New Zealand I noticed that all the Shell garages had turned into something called Z Energy. Seems the New Zealand Government had bought out Shell and now owns and runs the network. All the profits go into the country's pension fund, and it's hundreds of millions of dollars. They keep dropping the fuel pieces, and they have stopped outsourcing work and employ more Kiwis instead.
