Please don't blame the garages either I used to sell fuel at my garage and I put 2p a litre on what i could buy it for, I was still 3-4 p dearer than asda!!
When somebody came in and paid on a card for under a tenner it would have been cheaper for me to go give the guy 20p and tell him to go somewhere else !
Coz it costs at least 50p to use the machine !
That is why so many indy garages are closing

blenkie1 - Diesel is more expensive, it never used to be, up until the early 90's, when diesel powered cars became more popular, owing to the better fuel economy they give, of course, the goverment cottoned onto this and increased prices.

The best I ever got out of fuel prices was when I ran a Landrover with a Perkins 4203 diesel in it. This was 3.3 litres so I was on the maximum fuel allowance at work, but we had to produce receipts for the fuel used.
This meant I had to buy more fuel than I used. The excess was stored in an old central heating tank and lasted me for a couple of years after I left that company.

My dad had a diesel Land Rover in the 60's and it wasn't easy to find garages that sold diesel!
Because trucks run on it, with a 400litre tank either side of the tractor unit that makes for a lot of revenue each fill up.

You usually had to go to a diesel pump that was set aside from the petrol pumps or go to a garage that taxis used.

Just out of interest, while you moan about paying £7 odd for a gallon of fuel have any of you stopped to think how much a gallon of beer costs when you pour it down your necks on a Saturday night?
I pour beerdown my throat, like the rest of here: When I can afford to. After I've paid through the nose for something the Saudis pay less than 10cents for.

Who was your merchant account with. I used cardsave, cost me 15p for debit cards, and .75% for Credit cards, and turnover was only 290-340k in its best yrs.

Blimey, I was moaning the other night about having to pay 40p/l for veg oil...
Used to run the veggie oil myself, in an old corsa, ran great!
Diesel was cheaper right up untill the truckers lead the fuel blockades when labour was in power , they got thier own back by increasing the cost of diesel more than unleaded to punish them

Duty is the same for both unleaded and diesel (currently 58.19 pence/litre?) and has been for eons i think. Diesel costs more so 'they' obviously take a little more VAT further exaggerating the price difference
Diesel used to be allowed to be dirty smelly stuff 'cause only commercial vehicles used it. Then it started to became more popular and, once everyone owned a diesel, they decided it needed cleaning up hence the nice simple rugged diesel engine becoming a fragile POS covered with emissions tat that keeps breaking and the fuel getting more expensive because it has to be refined more than it used to- apparently you can refine less 'ultra low sulphur' diesel from a barrel of crude than you can petrol.
Diesel is cheaper than petrol in France because it attracts less duty (36.76 versus 52.14 pence for petrol in 2011/12). AFAIK that's common to most of Europe?
I can't be bothered to do the maths but i'm pretty sure that, pre tax, fuel here is amongst the cheapest in Europe?

it is. its why so much stuff is expensive ****s in red braces gambling on what itll be worth in the future. Oil is at a low at the moment and demand is static Its all taxes and speculation.

I've simply reduced my driving to a mimimum. No more going out for a drive just to enjoy the experience - every mile has to be for a reason. At one time I was doing 50,000 miles a year , albeit reimbursed for business costs, but last year did just 3500 miles. That was in a Smart Fortwo as well ! The family car is a Skoda Fabia diesel that does 55 mpg no matter how driven and easily gets 70 mpg on a gentle run. Gone are the days when I ran an XJ6, Rover SD1 V8, Range Rover V8 (had 3), 240 & 740 Volvo etc. Now economy is more important than anything else.

I did 500 miles between my last two MOTs.
Trouble is with the price of fuel being artificially inflated by tax we're being manipulated into having cars we don't necessarily like.
I particularly dislike the higher VED on larger engined cars, mine is 1900cc and I pay £220pa VED before it turns a wheel.

Ey, Sunday drivers have been replaced with everyone doing 35-40mph. Drives me crazy. Don't go anywhere unless I have to because of this, it now takes 45mins to get to york, used to be 30. And that's with no traffic on the road.

Mate has a Nissan Pathfinder that the VED is £475pa. It is only used for caravan towing as a new Seat is used the rest of the time. It's 59 reg and has only done around 10000 miles in 3+ years yet is used most weekends during spring, summer and autumn plus a couple of longer breaks of 7 / 14 days.
