Can I justify a surface grinder going cheap ?

Well Screwfixup have managed to not deliver, two phone calls and two promises of 'we'll find out what's happening and call you back tomorrow at the latest' have been broken, I'm thinking of cancelling and going for a Warco 2B12 instead. I know the older stuff is better, I don't want a restoration project or spend six months waiting for the 'right one' to come along. For what I need, it'll be good enough, if quite a bit more than I wanted to spend.

I'm really interested in the utility of one, apart from cylinder heads.

From my research it needs to be hardened steel.

The aluminium oxide wheels cut, not grind.

And max cut is two thou's or it gets too hot.

just use the correct grind stone to material. i do remember making spirit levels from mild steel when i was an apprentice.

That's good to know, I've been researching YouTube engineering videos since last night.

If you have the space, and you have the money, and you can keep it in reasonable condition, then at that price it is worth buying it as an investment even if you never get around to using it.
There is a steep learning curve with them, and its not going to be something you use very often - but if you do find yourself needing one, there isn't really a substitute.

I don't know what the prices are like in France, but over here you could sell that tomorrow and triple your money without breaking a sweat - and they will only go up in price with time.
Depends on your situation - many a time I've kicked myself for passing on a machine that was a bargain, but I couldn't justify because I didn't have the space.

Well, I don't really have the money, as I'm tied up in hard-core and concrete floors for the next month, but 200 euros is only 200 euros, and this seems an opportunity too good to miss, if I can justify it.

Hence the thread. They do seem to cost silly money second hand, so I'd be a fool not to buy it.

Looking at internet prices I've seen bids in auctions from 50 euros, and similar machines from 4 to 9 grand.

Not sure what France is like but you could flip that for twice, three times the price in this country easily.

personally I’d keep it. Try and work it. If it’s not used or doesn’t make money then out it.

And this is France, where second hand machinery is normally twice that of the U.K.

Sellers English, hence my bargain mill.

@Pete. took a hammer to his 540 because it was worn out.

Mine has some issues with the hydraulic system and I'm still waiting for a contractor.

When you transport it by trailer. Put a small ratchet strap around the table and the saddle, to hold it all together.
