I use our local nut & bolt emporium quite a bit, AJ Fasteners on the manor trading estate Benfleet, very good for all sorts of stuff & good prices, they stock good quality cutting & grinding discs, Sait Planet brand, probably the best i have ever used.
For hydraulic bits & pipe fittings & hose of every description Leigh Baxter associates in Southend.
I dont use our local welding supplier much as he is swingeingly expensive!

I don't mind that type of free shipping at all, it just means I buy more stuff. The free shipping issue I am talking about is where every item includes free shipping so they account for the price in each item. For example there is a bolt store with free shipping even for one bolt meaning it might be $5 for one the pricing then scales quickly when you buy more. The problem is if you add a different sized bolt it will be another $5 as they are including the shipping cost which wouldn't have increased for two bolts.I don't mind free shipping, I can usually make an order up to get it and after shopping around I've usually got more or less the best price on whatever I want anyway without buying four gazzilion.
What annoys me is a minimum delivery charges - say I want to buy some lightweight jiffy bagable item @ 4.99 but minimum delivery charge 8.99+VAT
Even worse when you find the outfit also has an ebay/amazon shop and offers the same thing cheaper with either free p&p or an option for royal mail 2nd class.
I buy a lot of automotive restoration supplies online and most of the sellers include free postage like this.
Nicads can last 20 years or more if looked after properly. The trick is to make sure they are totally discharged before recharging. Run the drill under no load until it stops. Then do it again several times until it is totally dead. My Phillishave is 25 years old. Used daily. Still holds charge for 3 months of daily use. Far longer than my new Lithium ion one.
You are not recommended to drain Nicads completely, the absolute minimum for a nicad cell is 0.9v!
But they do have a long service life if charged/discharged properly. Most of the spacecraft out there are running on nicads & have been up there for years!
With my shaver I pop the lid and let it run down until it stops. Wait 30 mins do it again. Needs several tries until the battery is so flat it won't turn at all. It never ceases to amaze me how this shaver can still be working after 25 years of daily use. And the battery lasts months!
My first mobile phone had nicads. When the power ran low it would shut down but keep the display illuminated to discharge the battery as low as possible.
