A friend of mine is restoring a car identical to mine made in 1934 & has just stripped the gearbox to check for wear & tear. The gearbox is a 4 speed manual & reverse but only has synchromesh on 3 & 4 gear, 1st & 2nd being crash gears. This has resulted in approx 2mm of the gear being worn away of a total width of 9mm.
He can get a new set of gears cut but at an eye watering cost of over £1000.
On Youtube there are videos of people building up gear teeth using Tig welding & then dressing the teeth back to original size.
Anybody know if this is a viable option, what rods would be suitable & any firms who might offer the service?
