building sand for blasting

The results of a caliper getting the blasting treatment from builders sand. Not fantastic results,which I think is due to the 2.5hp compressor,I don't think it has enough whack to get decent results.

How did you dry out the building sand? You might have been better with that kiln dried block paving sand stuff?

building sand tends to be quite soft and rounded, not an ideal cleaning medium

i have been pointing up a patio with kiln dried sand from travis perkins at £4.00 a bag and is very fine and totally dry and is store in there warehouse

ps is a lot better than the b&q stuff

The last lot of B&Q kiln dried sand I saw was stored outside in perforated bags and was sopping wet. Same with Wickes, their cheaper damaged bags were wet.

the only time kiln dried sand is powefull enough is when its blasted on at 90 psi through a jet .even then its not that abrasive for doing rusty painted steel in any great rush

I satarted blasting using kiln dried block paving sand because it was cheap at £3.00 a bag.
I've since tried Iron Silicate from Scan Grit and it's far better. Works out at £5.00 a bag but it's re-usable, far less dusty and far quicker rate of cleaning.
Gives a better key for paint as well.

I kept in my apartment for oil spillages,but not used it for a while. The kiln stuff,I prefer not to use,don't want silicosis. Having said that,the sand that I did use,might be just as iffy. I prefer organic materials,due to doing it in a residental area. I might get walnut shells,but the price at £40 doesn't quite inspire me

why dont u just buy ally oxide if your doing it in a cabinet or use copper slag if expendable??

I'm doing out in the open,I don't have space for a cabinet. The caliper was just a trial basis. I'm dithering on whether to do the rear beam and suspension arms whilst they are off

have u a pressurised pot or a suction gun??either way just use a decent filter mask and sweep up after u then take mask off

Using sand is illegal in most cases.

Iron silicate & copper slag are the same thing, sold by Hodge Clemco (Wolverhampton Abrasives) as J-Blast.

i often wonder why anyone living at the beach or in the desert doesnt contract silicosis :as the sand is blasted over rocks with the wind and ground up on the roads by traffic . its allso ground up in foundrys after sandcasting by the fettlers . they use breathing gear but there isnt a dedicated booth to contain the dust of said parts .dow mack concrete near me used to shotblast the steelwork reinforcing bars on bridge end sections every week crap and dust allover so i hardly wurry about it when i use the stuff myself with airfed helmet. ive ben blasting for 30 years work on dusty sites. used to smoke 60 fags a day and im healthy ass

The law allows use of sand on bridges.

It is prohibited within premises, including blast rooms and cabinets.

I think it's the very fine dust that's the problem, my filters catch stuff as almost as fine as talcum powder.

Yes, I agree with the comments, don't use sand as when used for blasting, sand forms very fine sillica which gets stuck in your lungs and causes sillicosis. People who live at the seaside or near the desert do not get this because the sand there is not subjected to the forces found when used as a blast media. The sand in a desert is not routinely basted at high speed and pressure againsts rusty steel brake callipers for instance.

Sand does not work that well as a blast media either. Use commercially available media instead.

it works verry well on using it for building renovation as ive sandblasted 3 houses with it :laughing its also verry good for sandblasting aluminium parts
as well hardly any surface damage. as far as steel goes its not good as it isnt abrasive enough i use scangrit no 3 copper slag expendable. 90 psi and 90 cfm its got good cutting capabilities and can be used twice 4 quid a bag

Have a look into using crushed glass,no sillicosis and legal,not badly priced either
