Building a Workshop

In the future I could be building a replacement workshop, But I don't want it to permanent. So that I can move it if I move house etc

I'm not convinced that a wooden construction is a safe & secure option.

Could a steel built option be viable instead?

I was thinking of panels bolted together to keep the weight down also when having to move it.

Yes, but they suffer bad condensation issues unless built with insulated panels. And they are costly

Would insulating & ply lining on the inside be a good idea maybe?

I'd suggest that, unless you're in rented, then moving is such an expensive and involved process that taking a structure with you might just be more bother than it's worth. This coupled with the possible increase in sale price if you do it well and leave it behind.

Obviously none of that applies if it's rented.

Steel on its own is a condensation magnet, personally I prefer wood and to increase the security you could always use the steel mesh for concrete between the framework, finishing with internal cladding such as ply or similar.

Probably cheaper to buy a old site office cabin. Basically a shipping container fully insulated and finished with a normal door fitted. Pretty secure and easy to get a transport company to shift if you have the room?

You could, but you need an air gap between the insulation and the steel. Not the easiest things in the workd to fix too either.
Personally speaking Id not use a meatl roof, but fibre cement

Ashley have a look at the stormwall site hoarding panels, very sturdy eight foot square panels that will bolt straight to timber or steel lateral beams and are a great starting point for a shed . Come up S/H on ebay all the time and normally go for about £10 a panel. http://www.fastfence.co.uk/products/steel-hoarding/stormwall/

Absolutely nothing wrong with wood. Give it a good coat of wood preserve, creosote, paint etc and it’ll last for a good while.

Line it with insulation and ply and it’ll be almost as good as a brick construction..ply absorbs the shock and bounces back.

Much easier to move than sectional steel, and infinitely easier to move than a portacabin/container.

Timber frames built in 1.2 or 2.4m
Sections pre borded and finished with featherege etc before bolting together.
Easily removed and reinstalled.

Wood is a good option, all depends on the build quality I suppose and exactly what you intend to house in there. Knowing your current set up, a decent sized shed to give you storage could be the way to go.

Could potentially be moving, My current setup works pretty good. But just got to build a similar size workshop to house it all

At the big agricultural show there are always companies with prefab steel workshops for sale if they are of interest
They are better than shipping containers have a whole range of door options

i'd do sectional steel building and use a non drip cladding

id use composite panels and build out of steel so structure can be taken down and moved elsewhere

also look at racking systems as well for your walls and hold up your roof

great for stacking on and fastening your side panels onto it

I was just thinking that a wooden structure would be a lot easier to break into than a steel one.

Not sure about your planning laws but over here you don't need planning if it's a 'temporary structure'. There is a certain amount of grey area on what is considered a 'temporary structure'. A popular choice is a concrete base with a steel frame bolted down, galvanised z purlins fitted & covered in box profile sheeting, a neighbour built a 6mx12m one with no hassle from the planning office. Not sure how secure they are, a few seconds with a tek screw gun & you are through the wall!
