I was just thinking that a wooden structure would be a lot easier to break into than a steel one.

Not sure about your planning laws but over here you don't need planning if it's a 'temporary structure'. There is a certain amount of grey area on what is considered a 'temporary structure'. A popular choice is a concrete base with a steel frame bolted down, galvanised z purlins fitted & covered in box profile sheeting, a neighbour built a 6mx12m one with no hassle from the planning office. Not sure how secure they are, a few seconds with a tek screw gun & you are through the wall!

This my thoughts on why I'm not keen on a wooden structure. A crow bar & you would be through in seconds. Even steel mesh between the panels would slow people down.

Its that classic thing being that if someone wants something. Then they will get it!

They relaxed the planning laws on sheds over here a while back. If you have the space you can legally litter the place with sheds as long as its for personal use.

That's exactly how a local guy to me lost all his ground-keeping gear - saw through the walls of the containers uses to store them.

The Police seemed disinclined to follow the very clean track beaten down through the long grass through the adjacent field that led straight to the temporary traveller encampment . . .

Well now, if you build a large enough metal shed even uninsulated isn't an issue (heating might be costly though ).
Wood n flame don't mix too great like and just because you don't get condensation on the walls n roof dripping that don't mean metal benches and machines won't rust through condensation.
First decide location Size and bardic design and then get into materials Imo.

I build a concrete block workshop. Next time I'm going for an RSJ structure with insulated steel panels. Also saves you on foundations as you just need four "piles", one in each corner.

Free building.

Cleared a site a while ago and the neighbours fence was made of pallets ( all of it )



And he was so precious about it we were not allowed to take any of it down

I don't think pallet wood is upto my expectations

I'm thinking timber frame section insulated with corrugated steel on the outside & osb on the inside.

Would quite like roof lights/windows, But definitely not having a metal roof

Scrap garage doors (I pay a tenner apiece for them from the local company - delivered).
Galvanised studwork channel for the frame. (Only to align the doors, which are self-supporting).
Tek screws with a blob of weld, or pop rivets.
Spray foam, then OSB lined.

12’ x16’ 40mm insulation, normal metal sides, just over £8k

If you want windows it’s extra, wood grain effect on that size is £1600, tiled effect roof £800,

It doesn’t seem that extraordinary a price, but it’s more than I want to pay, mine needs to be 6m wide by 5m deep well insulated, and I was hoping to come in under £12k, including a concrete base, and be sturdy enough to mount solar panels on.

50 years ago, maybe 15 , I would have built my own but not feasible now. Certainly the steel is more secure than most and being maintenance free has distinct advantages when time is a diminishing asset. Greeves 246

There's a place locally that does new 13ft-ers for £8 apiece. +£10 delivery

No double tounge and groove log cabins, mine's 5.5m X 6m, all in with base approx £7K
