BT phone socket box

Hello all
Can anyone confirm that only bt/openreach are the only people that can move your main phone socket?. Has anyone any idea what the cost is?

Legally yes as it's there kit. Last time I was involved it was £100 ish

if there is enough cable just move it, but do it properly who is going to know i doubt very much they keep a record of where the entry point is at each property

move it yourself there a pack of robin b st//rds a guy i wired an extension for got quoted £250 .00 for moving one . the engineer sneekily said he would do it for £100 i done it for 50 quid it took me half an hour to shorten and move the cable. i felt guilty of robbing him at that

Must admit I have moved a few in my time. £100 was an official bt quote but local blokes were doing them for £50 during the flood repair works

when i moved into the workshop they told me it would be £30 connection fee but then upon connection at the exchange i was told there was a problem on the line and it would be £129 for an engineer to come out and fix it.
anyway i found the main cable was damaged just inside the workshop so i sorted it the engineer came said thats strange i cant find a fault £30 charged and no questions as to why the fault disappeared

new cable

Xmas, needed a new Cable from the BT box outside the house to the BT master socket, about 15 feet, £116 + vat if it was my cable, nothing if it was theirs, I was convinced it was theirs but didnt chance it, so it cost me nowt but 15 feet of new cableand my time.

Thanks guys, i'll have to get new cable as its too short. Can i buy the tool to push the wire into the slots on the box.

Or a plastic version often comes free with a new faceplate from DIY shop. But a small terminal driver can be used at a push

It's DC with + earthed so only gives you a tickle

BT don't keep a record of the position but do know if its a modern master socket (NTE5) fitted. Voltage is 48-50 volts DC rising to 75 volts on ringing. You can buy everything on line including "jelly crimps" if you need to run a new cable from the outside.
Of course it breaks your contract terms and conditions to touch anything above the current master socket.

25 years ago i just had the old conector box with fixed phone fitted . if u wanted a new one u had to pay for it . i was working in a reposessed house so i nicked the new plug in telephone point and wired it in at home i phoned bt up and told them to collect the old telephone as i was paying rental on there equipment and no longer in use , they said they had no record of my new point , i blagged my way through and said the point had bt stamped on it so they must have changed it i got the price reduced
