And call alarm systems are officially not compatible with any form of digital voice( And digital voice adapters are specifically forbidden from being used to supply them) and the customers that have them are advised to call their call alarm company and get an upgrade at unit that works over 4g.

I think I'd rather have it on VoIP than 4g... They still haven't finished rolling out 3g around here, and they are already turning that off

Not sure how they will work it, but I wonder if dual path might be an option like intruder alarms?

A rep from a fibre supplier called last week and she said 2025 and copper wires would be turned off by government decree, but that is unlikely because some safety pendants only work with the wired technology.

Couple of years ago Virgin came round my dad’s house and disconnected his copper line, told him it wouldn’t work any more as the gubberment were shutting it down. They crudely ran a phone line from their broadband box across the room to his telephone and left him there.
His old phone wouldn’t work on the new line, his alarm pendant box wouldn’t work on it either.

I went round to see him and found him totally incommunicado. 85 years old, disabled, can’t walk more than a few yards, and Virgin dumped on him like that.

My sister called Virgin up, gave them a right rollicking, and they sent a guy round to install a mobile phone type backup for the pendant alarm. And re-run the phone wire that their ‘technician’ had made such an absolute cockup of running the first time. And we bought him a new phone, that he struggled to understand for quite a while.

Customer satisfaction? Nah, Virgin don’t do that.

Clearing a friends house, her mother passed on.
They Had BT, we found 6 routers, expanders, the CD etc. Only one was used, the rest still in the sealed BT boxes
We asked if BT would collect etc, the flatly refused.
We tried again, so they said no, again. We Wrote to them, we emailed them. Each time they said no.
We told them that tonight they will be on E bay, they collected this morning, made good the holes etc and left.

Virgin were predictably useless, as was amply evidenced by the pitiful job their clown made of running the new phone wire around the room, randomly stapled, running in front of the radiator piping, instead of tucked behind it, then cutting a corner in front of the legs of a small table. A blind 3 year old could have made a neater job.

That's what my wife has been supplied with. Motorola with sim card I believe.

I've been looking into this a bit more.

We get a lot of power cuts round here, and mobile coverage is very patchy. So we keep a wired phone plugged in upstairs, the longest outage we had was overnight and it kept working. The exchange either has decent sized batteries or wasn't affected in the first place.

When I go over to VoIP I'll need to provide my own UPS. This will need to run, at a minimum, the fibre ONT, the router and the analogue phone adapter. 15 watts each, according to the manufacturers' figures, for up to 12 hours. Most UPSs are rated by peak power not runtime, something big enough and reasonable quality from the likes of APC or Eaton will set me back over £500.

Having to spend a fair chunk of change to get the same fault tolerance I already have doesn't seem like much of an upgrade to me. But there's no point grumbling at this stage. As everything I've got to power happens to be 12 volt with a mains adapter, it occurs to me a leisure battery and a smart charger might be better value for money, if I can find somewhere to fit it (and hide the mess of wires from Mrs RnB).

Anybody else done this?

In my day most Exchanges had battery backup but that was only until the generator kicked in but i remember them stripping out the batterys from the local one to me so maybe its generator only now

when ive seen a fibre cabinet in the street open it looks like there is powered hardware in there would this be affected when you loose power ?

No but my wife's phone is supposed to be able to switch and use cellular from any provider. Allegedly.

We don't have cabinets round here, the fibre runs all the way into the house from the exchange. But the box that converts that to Ethernet is something else that has to be powered 24/7 if you want your VoIP phone to keep working.
