broken stud ..tips to center drill for drilling it?

Yep, let it cool before spanner.The heat from the welding will expand the thread making it tighter still.

I must lack patience then as i attack them fairly quick, Not while its still red but not much cooler.

Usually all the bolts come free nice and easy until the last one Grr

I think that if they have been done with Locktite in the past undoing them hot works better.

Once you have welded what ever add on you like , once it has gone off bright red ..just before black give is a sharp hit fair & square on the head with a 1 pound hammer .. this will also be beneficial to help in loosening or slightly deforming the thread in the threads & make for clearance and surface friction breaking.

took me 4 trys to get a good enough weld on the stud , i was a bit wary of welding the washer to the manifold

got it out though

Without special rods when you weld onto cast the weld cools too quick and cracks off so it dont stick anyway.
Or is this just my limited experience with cast?

grrr got the manifold off

one of the manifold to downpipe studs has sheared say 2mm below the surface ..do you agree that cant be welded ? or any clever ideas

drill it and re-tap what have you got to lose

Had a few of those over the years and some have been drilled right through and a nut or even a bolt with the side ground off used as a long lasting repair.

cant drill right through ..it leads to inside the manifold

just been trying to weld a nut on it , just keeps snapping the weld when i turn the spanner

my drills barely touch it either

What size drill are you trying to pilot it with Steveo? If it's around an 8mm(?) bolt, try under 3mm. File/grind it flat as you can and centre pop, give the drill a lick on the grinder - if it doesn't cut, don't persevere, back to the grinder and try again - if you dull the edge on the drill, back to square one. Should cut with very moderate pressure, otherwise broken drill to add to your woes Once you get through the surface hardening should be straightforward, you'll feel the break-through at the end of the bolt. Wish you were nearer, would remove the (offending item) for you

yes it was under 3mm i was trying...new drill bits as well lol

as its a broken end would i be drilling into hardened stuff?

i'll stick at it

Hi Steveo,

Get the piece you're trying to drill as flat as possible - drill bits are designed to to cut a flat face. If a bit below the surrounding surface level, a little toying with the drill nose angle/relief will help - you'll feel when it "bites" and cuts correctly. Not being a smart-ar*e, hand sharpening a -3.0mm drill on a rough wheel to do this can be hit-and-miss by eye (especially mine), don't feel bad if you have 3-20 goes at it When it cuts, you'll know
