We have a 8" pedestal grinder at school, I refused to use it because one of the wheels is so out of balance the machine visibly shakes. As its an academy I cant change it (despite having a certificate) Instead the service providers sub contractor has to do it, they come back every year & say its Ok, I tell them its dangerous, I have told the top brass why i wont use it. This has been going on for 4 years! But i aint using it & nor is anyone else. Such is progress!

When I did a stint with a crop dusting outfit, I was sent to Sywell to help out on the certificate for one of our aircraft. The so called engineer in charge, was trying to clean the waxy preservative on a trim cable to inspect it. He used the wire wheel on one side of an angle grinder. Even I, as a green tyro, thought this was a bit tricky. Natch, it snagged and since the cable was still connected to the trim jack in the tailplane, it ripped out some of the surface and a couple of ribs. Interesting repair and not cheap. I got tabled by the co owner, back in Norwich. Pointed out I was just the help, so how was I supposed to question the Licenced Eng in charge? He conceded that it was not something I could have avoided. Basicly, pizzed off at the cost. The Licenced eng was out quite soon after that.
What i should have done was kept my trap shut & hid behind the lathe off to one side & done a snooker shot on the side of the wheel with a long steel bar with it running. After school of course! Then they would have got the blame.
If i did owt like that now they would know it was me...
