There’s some interesting theories, but I’ll try and correct some of the more common misconceptions which are often sensationalised in the media.

No ships/subs “run” on windows xp. They may well have some pcs on board that will do some secondary functions that may still have older operating systems, these are not involved in running the ships combat systems, they’ll be doing very low level jobs and the reason they continue to run older systems is that there’s software on there that’s either not compatible or not tested with later systems. It’s no different to industry, there are manufacturing plants still running windows 2000 that are making state of the art pharmaceutical products….

The ship itself will be under peacetime rules of engagement so they won’t be allowed to let a few missiles off even if they wanted to. The waters are disputed so the choices are to ignore it - in which case Russia has effectively “won” without firing a shot - or we can exercise our right to pass through as international waters, to remind them of that fact. It’s a well rehearsed game, and nothing new - in fact since the end of the Cold War it probably happens a lot less than it used to.

As for the ships, yes they have had some issues but the T45 is one of the best air defence ships around, and the QE class is probably second only to the American carriers in terms of capabilities. Astute submarines are probably the best in the world at the moment …id rather be serving in any of those than anything the Russians can knock out.

People love Britain bashing
British kit was pretty awesome in the Gulf War as well. Challengers much better than Abrahams. Which of course also happen to use British designed armour although the earlier generation.
BAE are one of the biggest defence contractors in the USA developing all sorts of sneaky high tech stuff.
The British submarine fleet is considered one of the best in the World. A lot more capable than outfits 10x the size. And look who gets called for underwater rescue.

We had a tour of HMS Bulwark; the Combined Ops room (the main difference between Bulwark and a grey ferry) had whole bulkheads covered with rows of humming CRT screens, with an old Windows screen displayed on all of them; I asked someone if they were having a laugh, but he said the old O/S is more robust and reliable.
( The guy also showed me a roll of sticky tape which could 'instantly seal leaks in HP hydraulic lines' though, they make up any old crap to tell civvies...)

Yes, plus it is built into EMP cabinets. It is also designed such if the computers fail the system can be used in local or hands on trigger control. Built in battle damage back up.

Plus it is an unusual thing for a British sleek grey messenger of death to be in that area.
Normally we go to Istanbul and no more, but she was excessing her right to sail shipping lanes.

It's the old game Russia loves and plays so well... begin acts of aggression but hide behind the "we've been wronged" umbrella... I bet the summoning of british ambassador for his "dressing-down" occurred only because the Russians knew that itv was going to be in the media spotlight... spin, and counter-spin...

Of course, you never really know how good or how bad a weapons system is until you try it in a real warfare situation. The big thing about the T45 is supposed be the state-of-the-art radar and the ability to track numerous threats at the same time, very much the issue that overwhelmed the Sheffield when the Exorcet got through in the Falklands. Ironic then, that all the missiles on the T45's are French-made Aster missiles.

No, she was hit by one Exorcet, caused by the command making a series of mistakes.
One standing the ship down to State 2, when a Air raid warning of an incoming raid was sent fleet wide.

XO on the satellite link home to the UK what swamped her EW systems, The SAT should be sent to receive only in that situation.

When the raid was inbound Sheffield turned across her Type 21 point defence ship preventing her from engaging the incoming plane and deployed weapons.

When she was going to be hit, turned the wrong way, hard to drop the target side, so the impact would of been high up in the superstructure. Ok mkes fire fighting and damage control harder, but it would of reduced her damage.

Her Damaged control was found to be "In need of improvement" on her way down, Her crews anti flash discipline was found to be lax.

The plane that dropped the weapon flew over the land, we made sure to return some of their 13mm balls of lead to them, meaning he may of got wet on the way home.
