Leaf bags are made of paper. Need to be so they can be recycled with the lawn waste (they will refuse pickup of any plastic bags.)

I wish they would adopt that idea here, council provides green plastic bags for garden refuse and collects every 2 weeks, problem is they empty bags into lorry then stuff bags into cage on side where they fall out as lorry moves!
I always know what day is garden refuse collection by lines of green bags in gutter every few hundred yards, then following day, blown all over road!

your lucky here we have to have a green bin for garden stuff(unless you hide a small amount each fortnight in the real bin). and you have to pay for the green bin on top of council tax. then they compost it and sell it!! win, win for the council and i wonder why people dump it or burn it? bless somerset council. and i didnt notice any reduction in council tax when they went from weelky to fornightly. apart from if the lid aint shut they dont empty it and leave a note on it.(jobs worth ********). no tips at christmas anymore!!

OOOOooooh *update* *excitement!*
Starter motor turned up today, bolted it on during my lunch and chug chug chug braaaaAARRRRPPPPPPPP. It lives!
Couldnt run it for too long as oil was peeing out the tappet cover because that was still on the bench but ran it enough to do a lap of the garden
Exhaust was decidedly black and sooty with the throttle opened wide, and smokey blue at low revs (hey ho, thatll be the bore scratches then), its going to need carb attention too it seems...

But, its running and now a known quantity to work from. Now to weld up the cutting deck where someone has cut holes in the side

Found something interesting on my 18HP B&S ont he "riding welder"

Used it today to weld a trailer hitch on the riding mower to ferry the trailer around. Was smoking a bit.

I had changed the oil when I got it. Checked it and it was like tar and over full. Put in new oil and it is better.

I bet the previous owner never changed the oil. The new oil must have dissolved a lot of crap.

If ignition timing is near enough correct, and you are getting a decent spark at the plug, then it should run, otherwise try a squirt of "Easy Start" down the carb' if it does'nt fire up you really do have problems. Get back to me if you need more help, Bob.

In fact its now totally worn out after ferrying my lad round the garden for a season and op has bought and repaired back to running condition a pair of real massey harris tractors to do the garden with instead of messing around with total rubbish like a briggs and scrapem engine.

do i take it that if they put briggs and stratton motors in helecopters along with harley davidson engines u wouldnt fly in one

if they put briggs engines in helicopters, I wouldnt go within 100km of a airport!

Actually make that about 5km, you'd be safe after that.

11hp would probably be 20 years old or more. Most the 12HP ones I have are near 20 (the same engine is 12.5HP in the late 90's.)

You get what you pay for. Cast iron sleeve, overhead valves, roller bearings and an oil pump/filter (vs oil sling) are all options on B&S engines. Box movers will carry the cheapest they can get. The problem with B&S is most sold are the cheap ones.

My generator has a B&S 26HP, V-twin, OHV, roller bearing with an oil pump and filter and runs on natural gas. Completely different animal than what Joe Sixpack will ever see.

Yes I know the difference between the IC series and the cooking models. The bigger ohv vanguards arent that bad as you say, just tainted by the reputation of the lower end models, but you dont get the option of a actual oil pump and the improved bearings etc till above 16hp in the vanguard series, anything less and its a bendy piece of metal to throw oil round. Give me a ohv honda engine any day of the week, especially for the sub 16hp category.

Getting away from things which have briggs engines full stop into running a proper tractor is a much better option all round and actually cheaper on maintenance costs and much less stressful.

Still wouldnt fly in a briggs powered helicopter.

i had a old briggs and scrap iron engine and was told you could not have them rebored as they had the cylinders lined with something. i ended up changing the 9 horse power engine for a big honda had problems keeping the front wheels on the ground after.
