Never had an issue with discs not held on by a retaining screw except on my son's VW Polo, everytime we have one particular wheel off the disc turns meaning aligning it and the hub and the wheel is a headache. Must remember to find out what size it needs and buy a few spares.

Update my welding is **** couldnt successfully weld a nut on full of slag from the 2mm rods will go back to it tomorrow might try mig.

Mrs Robo had some fancy alloy wheels with some sort of universal spacer so I made a couple of those out of threaded bar to line everything up

Our 16 year old car was supplied with a long stud for wheel-changing. Screw it in, then hang the wheel on, refit other wheel bolts and exchange stud for the last bolt. No drama and with the minimum of effort.

So simple. Any studding of suitable thread would do. Saves actually lifting the wheel into place. As it is fitted before the wheel, any loose disc would be fixed in position - so no trouble fitting a wheel.

The discs are secured with a screw, btw, so this ‘aid’ was supplied simply to make wheel changing easy.

I have a vague recollection of this, a plastic screw in dowel IIRC, can't think what car it was on though, a Peugeot or Renault or Skoda perhaps?

They're nice handy things. I have a little collection of them i've amassed.

I'd give the hub face a bloody good clean before putting on the new disc.

I changed the discs on my old Rover 800, 8mm screws in the two jacking holes, as the disc seemed rather tight.... screwed in a bit, getting tight, bang! the retaining screw snapped off and hit me in the chin. It was covered in road muck and I hadn't seen it. Doh.

I did exactly the same on my boys car a few weeks ago
Drums through, it actually cracked the drum
£88 later for new drums and the shoes we were checking looked brand new!

Dead right. If it shows any signs of not wanting to come out, hit it with the impact screwdriver before you damage the head.

I never had much luck with impact drivers. I suppose it comes from the days of 70's Jap bikes and those cheese headed crank case screws! But disc locating screws have almost always released by use of a hittable screwdriver which is just the right size. This short shock to the thread makes it let go. Then it's down to Plus Gas which no mechanic should be without! I always kept a few new screws in my brake parts bin. Come to think of it I will post a pic of the contents of the bin in case anyone has an old 80's/90's/00 car that needs that little pin/spring/clip.

Just done a Mk2 Astra the other week. pads and discs.
The new kit came with the screws, springs and clips.

I well recall those Jap cheese head screws. I was very pleased with myself when I bought a Honda T screwdriver - the perfect size and I still have it today.

The issue on my Volvo is the head on the Disc retaining screw is Torx - but also made of cheese (And rust). Can you use Torx in impact drivers?
If not, is the answer just heat?

Yes you can.
First blow set the driver to tighten, that way will break the rust seal.

Then afew blows to remove and you are away.

I’ve never owned a merc. These were fitted in earlier year models of this vehicle. Our 02 year model had one as well. I’ve had various lengths (and threads) of studding in my toolbox over the years. Sometimes not even bothered to use threaded rod - a dowel at each end of a cylinder block is enough to hold a gasket in place, while refitting the head.

Are we talking about hubs/wheels or blocks/heads?
