that's the bit I don't understand... why will it damage it?
I read it's because the peak current is too high, but I don't understand how it;s higher than start-up current?
When you start up you are not dead-shorting the supply because the motor windings have resistance (and inductance but we'll ignore that). If you disconnect the power feed the spinning motor becomes the supply which you ARE dead shorting.
