It's got extractor thread. It looks like octalink from the first pic, but I don't know what sugino use.
Is there apart number on the back of the cranks, look it up.

You usually thread a crank arm extractor into the crank arm. Just make sure its threaded in fully. Otherwise you will rip the aluminium threads out of the arm.

I could've sworn it was square taper from the first pic...

How are the threads in the crank arm?

the threads in the arms are fine but when i insert the extractor there is nothing for it to push againanst (sorry spelling)

Can you fit the middle bit of the retaining bolt in (unscrewed a few turns) with the extractor?

no the retaining nut covers all of it

The hole through most bottom brackets is smaller than the bolt you took out, so you could find a bolt/bit of bar to go in and push against?

It has 8 splines and if it was shimano I would say it's octalink.
The cranks are Sugino aren't they?
can't you find any info online?

Definitely looking more like Shimano octalink to me.

My crank extractor has an adaptor that sticks on to the end of the thread with a magnet to make up the difference in diameter from square taper.

Even then you don't get much of a hold of the splines.

It's only an el cheapo IceToolz one from eBay, but it works better than a mates Park Tool one.

Not sure what your crank extractor looks like, as per Scruffy welder, mine has two adaptors - the spare is stored on the handle. All you need is a disc to bridge the hole something like 5p might suffice.

There's two versions of Octalink - V1 with 5mm long splines and V2 which are longer and different width.

Adapter need to be no more than 17mm, you could try rounding an old
M10 bolt with an angry grinder, then wrap tape round the threads to make
it stay in the centre.

Octalink V1 was pretty limited on mountain bikes it was used on M950 - 2 only.

It doesn't take a lot to extract octalink arms, the self extractors are only an ali
threaded collar that probably fit's with the bolts you have.
