Bottem bracket adjustment ?

See how you go first before you start worrying. Just make sure the spanner is fully engaged and square so you don't knacker the BB. Also make sure you are going the correct way. Now I hope I have remembered this correctly, left hand thread on the chain side and right hand on the other. Take chain side off first, by turning clockwise.

ok so how do i know what one is left and right looking at it from the front or as you sit on it i would assume ?

Sitting on the bike, right side is left thread and left side is right.

all this and i will have to pry it out of his hands before we can start he will not want to give it up for few days i was going to remove the bracket to easy measure and then order one but then he will have to wait untill it turns up

Just tell him he's likely to do more damage riding it with a a worn BB.

Should be obvious as to thread direction as they normally have arrows and torque for tightening

No turn it right. Left thread is the opposite to your normal thread.

and the chain side is the right side of the bike as sat on it turn it towareds the front to undo

Apply wrench.

Pretend it's a pedal.

Turn it in the direction you would turn the pedal to move.

That's 'undo'.

BB might be a Truvativ Powerspline or a Shimano Octalink rather than a square taper...

Not much difference in terms of dismantling but might be tricky to find depending on sizes...

Last one I did ended up with the splined tool (rather a nice Raceface one) held in place with a couple of washers and a bit of threaded rod right through the centre of the BB spindle. Kept everything snugged home and dead square to the bearing cups.

They do get kinda tight!

Don’t forget to buy a crank arm removal tool at the same time you go and get the splined BB tool as you’ll need the cranks out of the way first. Sorry if you already covered this.

Cheapo tool kits should have both and most tools you'll need. I'd also consider a Park sram chain link pliers and a Park cable cutter.
