Boiler has packed in

Hi all,
Just got to my missus house and her boiler has broken, don't know much about it but she says the pilot light is on but when she pushes the buttons to turn it on it doesn't 'fire up' does anyone have an idea what it might be? I'm bloody freezing here lol.
I've included a few photos of it in case it's of use.

is it a combi if so check the pressure it should be over 1 bar for it to fire up

It's not a combi boiler it's the old type with a tank in the attic. sorry Ivery got zero knowledge of this type of stuff but it's the kind where you have to wait a while if you want a bath

Sounds like the Ferrolis that Angus Council installed X thousand of, that are now all rapidly failing

I used to pass their factory on the A38 going to Derby, don't know if it's still there?.

is the pilot light lit as noted the above comment if so it has a pototometer to say flame is ok on them without it it wont fire some of us know it as a thermostat control near the flame

ionisation probe if the pilot light is off that the boiler wont fire when calling for heat this also means this part can go faulty as well

does your boiler fan try to spin up inside of the boiler ?

And that's why I have a log burner as well, my boiler packed up earlier this year, so I just switched the immersion on and lit a fire until it was fixed.

Many years ago I used to have a combo (Spit Spit Spit, awful idea) and when that failed I had no heating or hot water for a couple of days and of course it was in the middle of a really cold winter, never again will I rely on only one form of heating.

I'm with you there - combination oil boiler, wood burner, electric shower and a diesel generator. I hate the thought of getting caught out!

Yes were similar, oil boiler, log burner, emersion heater, and a genny, for standby. Manual start but hey ho runs the hole house except the cooker and tumble dryer.

Nother common reason boilers wont light is the thermocouple, they fail safe ie high so your boiler wont light.

Overheat lockout? Maybe a reset pushbutton hiding in a dark corner somewhere, just gagging for a £55 callout charge for a techie to press it...

as i recall the Sime Superior is actually a Potterton Profile in a Sime case , I put one in my mothers house 14 years ago it was £200 cheaper than the potterton as I recall !

There is an overheat button on the bottom , worth pushing it to try , if the pilot light is on its not the thermocouple ! could be the fan or the pressure switch

Well a bloke came today when the missus was at work , her dad let him in. he said it's knackd and can't be fixed

I don't yet know what he said was wrong.

Does this mean it'll need replacing with a combi boiler ? I'm guessing it ain't gonna be ch

You can have normal condensing boiler with separate hot water tank, we had one fitted about 3 years ago.

Your current boiler isn't a Combi so don't be talked into replacing it with a Combi unless you want to free up the space your hot water tank currently uses, but I'd never have a combi boiler again.

When my combi went wrong (which it did nearly every year) I lost heating and hot water and because I had a shower that worked off the boiler because of all the hot water it could make, then no hot water = no shower either. I remember the pressure switch failed, a thermostat failed, the thermocouple failed, each time it wasn't hugely expensive to fix but it was hugely annoying, the biggest expense was a new Pcb which was £150.

Try and find out what has failed it might be repairable, how handy are you with electrics ? looking at the manual that someone posted it's got a decent fault finding flow chart to follow.
