Biscuit jointers

How useful are they in reality? I'm tempted to get one, but I'm still on the fence. Worthwhile addition to the tool collection or not?

I know it's one of those types of question. Some may find them invaluable, some likely won't.

Get a Biscuit bit for a Router, For the amount of time it will be used it is a better choice.

I'd say so. Much easier for jointing wood than dowels.

but an ornament unless its your trade . as above post use a router and it has plenty of uses

And easier to set up and use than a router with a cutter.

I've an 18V Makita and it's marginally but noticeably less powerful than the 240V version

I bought one, left it unused on the shelf for years before selling it on here, I have a biscuit cutter bit for my router should I ever need one.

if you fit a lot of kitchens, invaluable. can also use them for making large panels out of different types of wood. otherwise they are pretty useless.

i got a brand new half inch soft start makita router given and a host of quality cutters given it has a biscuit cutter in the set

I've got one FREN? branded I think. 240v. It's old I know that much. Maybe use it maximum of 3-4 in a year, then it sits in it's slot on the shelf for maybe a year or so until I have a use for it again. Useful to have. I've also got two routers and never thought to use a biscuit bit in one of them

Just buy the Bosch one and be done with it.

I bought one at the boot fair for a tenner came with a large bag of biscuits. It came in very useful when I had to replace some oak floor due to a leaking heating pipe under the dining room floor. I could not fit the last piece in with T&G all around but managed to get it all flush using the biscuit jointer at the ends and in a couple of other strategic places.

router tool myself and because its a router i get to use it on other stuff otherwise its sat on the shelf more time than used

I got a cheapy years ago, might be a titan, well handy to have and easier than a router in my opinion

I've got a router cutter for biscuits and used it quite a bit for odd bits of furniture. Usefulness depends very much on what you want to make / fix. A dedicated jointer is quicker to use than a router, but the only thing a biscuit jointer can do that a router cutter can't (easily) is to put slots in the middle of a flat panel (e.g. for shelves within a bookcase).

Of course, if you're really into that sort of thing, all the cool kids are into dominoes these days...

Another advantage of using a router your not just restricted to biscuits, you can use biscuit or full length spline,
