ps. dont ever be tempted to use it on aluminium, unless youre aware of what youre up to / what you are trying to achieve.

NaOH - sodium hydroxide.

If you dont have an easy source, then check drain cleaner (the powder stuff)

Be aware though - its truly vicious stuff when its dry. Wear gloves, wear eye protection, and watch out for dust (breathing it in)

What is nice, however, is that its (relatively) safe to dispose of down the drain - ie no complex disposal pathway.

I buy it in 25kg bags for about £24 (ie aprox £1/kg) but expect to pay more in small amounts. Id give you some if you were local, but theres no way im sending it through the post (!)

Right, had a go at cleaning up the casting and did some v prep, in doing so I pulled it a little too much and the last joined bit snapped clean off leaving me 2 bits. This allowed me to clean it more thoroughly cause I could get into all the nooks and crannies, better v prep, so ive just brazed it all up.

It's cooling down in the workshop and I'll clean it up over the weekend.

Parm might I suggest less reliance on welding the two ends together with the rebar and making use of the holes in the frame aswell seeing as you are going to be placing a LUMP of granite on it!

Good idea, but sadly the two ends I've got are ever so slightly different and the holes don't align up. My plan is to fix some 18 MM marine ply at the top on to which the granite will be fixed on, probably with something like no more nails or silicon. Only place I wish be using metal will be two cross pieces at the bottom, either 12 MM rebar I have kicking around or some square bar which I will buy. Once in it will never been seen as I have some oak which I will use to make a low shelf
