Best Way To Shift Paint

I've tried the electrolysis method on the side panel below, I've learnt a lot along the way and now have a proper power supply and can remove rust but it hasn't touched the paint, picture is before it had the treatment.

I want the paint off as ive got a few repairs to make and want to weld/braze some new cross members to join both ends.

What's the best, easiest, quickest, lazy boy method of removing the paint.

I was thinking of chucking the parts into a bonfire and then using a wire cup wheel on an angle grinder??

Any suggestions most welcome

Should have said, I don't want to spend any money and don't have a decent blasting set up so fire it is, will it affect the metal in any detrimental way ?

Yes sir it is, I have both sides but connecting pices are all broken. My plan is to get em cleaned up, make some stretcher pieces to join sides then fit with granite top for a table in the kitchen.

Next question, how will I join the stretcher pieces to join sides. I've got proper brazing kit but would prefer some form of welding, got both mig and stick. What's better MIG ? Or what type of rods for stick.

Frames are cast iron and new metal will be mild steel bar

I would v the broken bits pre heat them then mig them up, ive had success with cast iron using mild steel mig wire

Ok that's good, but how about joining new metal to the casting, will mig work for that too ?

If you're not in any rush, have you tried leaving it in the electrolysis tank for a few days?

My suspicion is that the soap in washing powder electrolyte does help to soften the paint but you will need to have a large anode all the way under the workpiece, not just around the sides. Line of sight and all that...

Ok will give it a go. Lots of learning on this little project for me. Cutting granite on massive tile saw, getting all the kit to polish and buff edges, cleaning paint from cast iron and welding of same, never a dull day round here

Just a thought, will rebar weld to castbiron with mig and pre heat?

rebar will also weld no problem have welded it quite a few times

I've got a more meaty power supply on order as my battery charger only does trickle charge and cuts out after a few hours. Will give it another go when it arrives, as for anode ive now got a sheet of 2mm steel under most of the job now and it fizzes quite a bit

I use electrolysis but also use concrete cleaner with hydrochloric acid to shift rust. It works really well. Wire brush or scrape off any heavy rust and dip for 1/2hr and check. Dip in clean water to neutralise.and clean with a wire brush.

Is it any good with paint

To a certain degree I think it does but it might depend on what type of paint you have also.

I don’t normally leave it in for long lengths is probably the issue when it comes to removing paint really well.

I wouldn't chuck it on a fire - you only have to distort it or crack it once.

What caustic do you suggest, and yes I have sort of a bath as per the photo

NaOH - sodium hydroxide.

If you dont have an easy source, then check drain cleaner (the powder stuff)

Be aware though - its truly vicious stuff when its dry. Wear gloves, wear eye protection, and watch out for dust (breathing it in)

What is nice, however, is that its (relatively) safe to dispose of down the drain - ie no complex disposal pathway.

I buy it in 25kg bags for about £24 (ie aprox £1/kg) but expect to pay more in small amounts. Id give you some if you were local, but theres no way im sending it through the post (!)
