Best way to mark steel?

Not talking about precision stuff or anything just what do you use to mark steel please? Sharpie markers and a scribe are what I use but it's not ideal like this example I had to cut tonight:

I tend to use masking tape with either pencil for hand cutting or Sharpie for disc cutting.

edge of an old 1mm laser disc if your getting it tight ,,, works really well and always to hand even if the chalk is still in the van ..,,,
todays free tip ,, once you see it done you think ,,,, why ddnt I think of that ,,,, thirty years ago. lol

I use my wit.

I knew of that stuff but didn't know it was called French chalk Ordered 10 sticks to start with a holder so I can be made fun of on here.



I was curious if there were some sort of specialist fine paint marker type deals these days for steel marking but seems not.

One of my favourite things is those auto chalk hole markers for drilling walls etc. Amazingly handy

I bought a pair of welders pencils thinking that they'd be great, and they're OK, especially the red one, but I still have quite a bit of turning the panel under the light and trying to see the marks I've made. The lead has come loose in one of them, too, so I can pick it out of the drawer, walk it to the workpiece, and then have to re-trace my steps looking for a thin length of pencil-insides. I think they're quite similar to the old Chinagraph pencils.
