I've just recently upgraded from a 10L SGS bottle to a 20L one & it works out good value for money.I’ve just got the 20l sgs 5% argon bottle.
Purely by accident as I went to swap my boc bottle over today but they are shut till the 2nd Jan.
I’m a very occasional user although I will be doing more now as I have a 1969 Vw Bay window I’m restoring.
I’ve had my boc x size cylinder since 2006 so 11 years ! By my working out, it’s cost me over £500 so today I paid £85 for bottle deposit (fully refundable if bottle goes back) and £57 for gas (£175 all in inc vat)
So in my situation it’s a no brainer to go for the rent free option.
On connection my regulator shows 210bar pressure so should get between 5 and 6 hours welding with it.
Define collection. Because it's certainly not charged when you go and collect a cylinder yourself.
I get your point! I'm just giving you the feedback that I have heard from many people. If they were feeling tight I'm sure they would of returned them themselves. So if I was renting something from you and said I didn't want to deal with you any more and couldn't be bothered to return it you'd happily turn up anywhere in the country for free?
....
I'm second worst - I've been with BOC a few years and they've been absolutely exemplary, they are currently the cheapest option and I can't see any reason whatsoever that I'd consider leaving.
I've just applied for the Cashback as I had totally forgotten about that offer!Sgs have just told me I get £20 cashback
Sgs have just told me I get £20 cashback so my bottle deposit is actually £65 and fully refundable with no time limit.
Like has been said there is no ‘one size fits all’
My 10litre boc bottle lasted me 10 years, so although I have more welding to do now, this sgs 20litre (filled to 210bar) should last me a long time with zero yearly rental.
If I’ve worked it out correctly, given the lower sgs refill pressure and having one refill per year (which I’d never do, so just for comparison) I’m fractionally better off with sgs, Hardly anything in it but certainly no worse + my deposit will come back if I switch. unless my maths is wrong.
If you used only two full bottles over 5 years (light user) then the cost per 100litres is £2.13 with sgs and £3.18 with boc (£293 compared to £179 over 5 yrs)
I’ve included the sgs deposit in my calculations although there is the argument that as you get it back it shouldn’t be included which makes sgs even better value for the light user.
So if you are doing more than one bottle a year, boc works out best, a bottle or less a year then sgs works out best.
Different suppliers business models are designed to suit different marketsI had welding I wanted to get on with and had ran out of gas, boc not open till Tuesday so it was fate that decided for me, but as it turns out it’s going to be the right choice for my personal situation.
I’m surprised boc don’t actually offer a similar scheme of rent free bottles for the lighter users.
Hi, just joined as I read this post and was investigating gas options. I'd only thought of disposables and BOC and didn't know about SGS.You local distributor in Norwich is;
