Best forward/reverse motor switch

In its slowest speed in low gear it is slow, believe me. For the cost involved I would just like to give it a try.

Not a chance. Been there and done that and broke all the bits......

I bought a soba tapping head after attempting that little experiment and my mill does 22rpm.......

Just had a look at similar size electric motors. the info on most of them states that the motor can be wire to rotate either way OR wired through a forward/reverse switch??, so can all motors be wired to forward /reverse through a switch as implied by the sellers?.

I guess most new motors can be reversed. It involves swapping links over, but if the motor needs to be reversed in service (such as operating a roller-shutter door) the wires connected to the links can be brought out to a reversing switch.

There's a nice Tapmatic for £50, unfortunately it's only 1/4" max.

I personally have never had a problem tapping on mills and pillar drills (using collet chucks I might add), but M5 would be my minimum. An electrician mate of mine was suposed to come round and fit a switch to my pillar drill, but has let me down thus far.
Still, I like the look and price of the one in the link to Chronos, that Mr Shiney supplied.

Easy enough to just use a double pole, double throw toggle switch for forward/reverse. That's all I do with mine. Never actually used reverse mind. Just wired it up that way as, why not, whilst I was wiring the motor up.

If that's on your new pillar drill, it's likely got a 'nonreversible' motor on it (unless you take the covers off and pull the wiring out - not just in that little junction box).

That wouldn't surprise me to be honest. I had a look at the motor, it's got no data plate or cover to expose anything. My electrical 'mate' would have been able to tell me if it was possible or not, but he is clearly unreliable. I am swayed more now with the tapping head from Chronos.

I just don't understand the negativity regarding reversing a drill.
Tapping with a pillar drill is not only quicker, but more accurate as well. Win win, there is no lose.

After wiring a reverse switch to my slip rolls the next step was to reverse my 16 speed drill.
Used it only yesterday to tap 10 off M8's in an MX5 manifold jig made from 100mm box.

Under £8, inc postage from China. That's less than 2 pints of tarts larger.



It's not perfect. Although it will do it, it struggles with M20.

I have a reverse fitted to my mill and have only ever used it for left hand bits where I am drilling something out like a broken stud or bolt. Never used it for tapping as its just to violent and broken way to many taps. I use the Soba tapping head for that job.

I power tap in mill and lathe all sizes from M22->M3.
I have broken two taps doing it, a 3/8"UNC roll tap and a M6 pre-plate roll tap, that's in 12 years of having the mill, I
don't thing I have ever broken a tap in the lathe. The M22 tap made the belts slip a bit;-)

V1 goes to U1, (CW), else U2, (CCW). Z2 goes to U2, (CW), else U1, (CCW). Literally, you switch the orientation of the wires between V1 and Z2 for clockwise or counter-clockwise rotation.

Those are machine taps, designed to send the swarf out of the underside of the hole.
Perfect for when the hole goes through the metal and the tap isn't backed off, as you do with a straight hand tap.

No idea what the gold paint is for.

For machine cutting a blind hole a spiral tap is used, which sends the swarf upwards like a drill does.

Any double pole switch of suitable rating which can reverse those connections will be fine. Drum, toggle, rocker switch etc.; It matters not what you use, as long as it's rated for 240V use at suitable current.
