I don't think Halon was any worse than any other gas designed to suffocate

Think 1211 is carcinogenic, but if you are dead anyway guess its a bit academic. It doesn't suffocate a fire though, but chemically reacts with the fire, breaking the fire triangle.

So is sawdust and talcum powder! Seriously though it is generally very safe and so very effective. A small 1kg Halon can out perform a 10kg CO2. Thats why they are still allowed on aircraft etc.

What about aircraft submarines and military vehicles? I see 2040 as the date when they must end. What do they use instead?

ALL being phaased out at the end of their serivice life.

All Hallon is to be removed, the government web page is due to be updated.
The industry know about this and have taken actions.

I look after a lot of MOD, government sites, each one, each building each risk will be assessed.

As I said, depends on the risk assessment.
I am not going to tell you what is fitted to a RN Sub, as I can not.

Planes and hangers are subject to a risk assment.

But most likly it will be one of the two type powder and or foams.
Depending on the risk.

Halon is used in high risk areas like planes and subs for a very good reason. Sounds like a huge backwards step to me
Very different from buildings of course.

Read somewhere recently that an airport in the Mid-West had carried out so many foamy-type fire drills (as well as some genuine stuff) over the years, that the foaming agent had poisoned the groundwater for miles around.

thats is why we are moving over to ECO foams.

Looks like in the name of having no money to spend the military gets an extension till they get new boats, saves refitting costs.

depends on the ship.
All RN ships have a very good fire main.
Hose reels are used as first response. The early Chubb ones are being removed on the refits.

Powders are fitted based on:
Risk.
Environment, eg where the risk is.
The Fire Risk assessment report.


As to no £££££££££££££££££
A simple Mine sweeper has a a minimum of 3 Thermal fire cameras. That was at one point the same amount on the Isle of White.
