Haha. We have very opposite experiences. Goodyears on one of our D2s with 18" rims were terrible. They raised on all the lugs and one type (more road based) were renowned for causing a particularly bouncy ride at certain speeds due to that wear.

I only had 16s on my d2 but hated the bfg...I may still go for the grabbers, works out the same price give or take a few quid

I like the grabbers. Just not as long lasting as the BFGs for me. We have GG AT (3 I think) on the D2 and D3 at the moment. Nice compromise for road and off road.

I would recommend Grabbers too. Previous set lasted 44k miles and still wasn’t down to the wear markers. They’d worn evenly even though I’d never rotated them and kept their grip throughout. They were pretty quiet too on the road with decent wet grip. Replaced with Grabbers as they’d performed so well. Only problem I don’t think they’ll be in your £500 budget.

Wet grass is difficult, all tyres will be acompromise.
Winchgirl has Micheline agilis cross climates on the camper does well on wet grass but not aggressive enough for mud etc.
In my years of off roading Greenway ( now long gone ) came up with a very good tyre, several others have now made them
I found these to be the best combination used for many years on my Suzuki Vitara and my P38 Range rover.

I have Falken's on my heap. They're MT's so not quite what you were looking for but I have found them to be very good. Cost £150 fitted which I thought was a good price (265/75r16).

Partly, because they are awesome off road, but also because I did 30,000 miles on a set on my L200 and they still had 4mm+ tread left.

Oh, and some white paint on the writing makes them look even more awesome.

My favourite was the Trac Edge, which unfortunately they don't make any more.

I have to say I have found the BFG ATs a bit skiddy on the road, especially in the wet.

Out of my price bracket now though. Have to stick with the Cheng Shin retreads now I am a pensioner

I had a set of GG AT3s on my Hilux. Used on and off road in all types of weather and never let me down.
They were also quiet compared to others on the tarmac.

after having them on a td5 and it getting stuck almost everywhere, then taking my terracan on road tyres to the same places and not getting stuck once, i will never have them again...the terracan on road tyres in 2hi dragged an FL2 out that was up to the front axle in a bog, the td5 got stuck just trying to set off on the wet grass on a small slope that scrap fiestas and corsas were flying up on bald tyres.

But which BFGs did you have? Their AT are a bit more road biased than other makes. Their MT are far more aggressive. BFG Trac Edge were my favourites - sadly not available any more but I think Cooper do something very similar.

TD5s in standard transmission form are rubbish off-road for traction, so I wouldn't use one as the basis for how good/bad tyres are.

Years ago when a previous employer bought a batch of the original Ford Rangers, the Rangers could get to places where the Defenders couldn't, and the Rangers all had standard road tyres.
However they had locking front diffs, and a LSD rear diff, so were guaranteed 4 wheels being driven, whereas the Defenders had standard diffs so you were only guaranteed two wheels being driven.

The Disco TD5 I used to have had traction control but I know they disabled the centre diff lock on some - although many people re connected it!

I was at one of the ARC shows where they had a little off-road demo course set up, someone said you could only get round it using aggressive tyres, Roger Crathorne (Mr. Land Rover) disproved that by taking a new Range Rover with road tyres round it, he said a lot of it was down to driving technique, not the tyres.

I have been on a few driving days at Eastnor Castle. Last time was in about 2014 in the then brand new Range Rover TDV8. They said it was on standard road tyres - which it was - but I noticed the one I took on the road was 275 and the offroad one 255. It still astonished me though. Raining all day - wet clay - and those normal road pattern tyres got us through one of the toughest sections no problem at all. Land Rover's latest traction control systems really are something special.

He took me round the jungle track at Solihull in a 110, lovely bloke and an ace driver.

A lot is down to driving technique, but the fact is the same drivers were getting the Rangers to places the Defenders were getting stuck, much to the upset of one of the Defender drivers who thought Defenders were the ultimate off-road vehicle.

Modern traction control will outperform any driver, but Land Rover aren't exactly using recent technology.
Massey Ferguson had traction control in the 90's, which was a major break through at the time.

The contractor my brother worked for at the time bought two tractors, one with it, and one without. The one with it would trundle through the muddiest of fields, whereas the other one with full 4WD and diff locks engaged would just bury itself. But MF were using a Laser on the underside so the TC knew exactly how fast the tractor was moving, so could detect what wheels were slipping and if the tractor had stopped moving.
I did drive one with it fitted once, but never got anywhere near any mud to try it. They did however have a display to show how much traction you had. My brother managed to get it into single figures a few times, as the challenge was to try and get it stuck, but nobody ever managed it.
