best all terrain tyres

budget of around 500 quid, 235 65 17 sort of size. budget is for the tyres only, fitting is done by a mate

looking at either maxxis, good year, falken or possibly toyo...any experience with any? mostly to be used on road, but with frequent wet grass, muddy access tracks to fishing spots and in the good old british weather on those 3 days we get snow.

ive never had any of the above, my go to on the discovery and terracan was always insa turbo, either dakars (mud terrain) or rangers (all terrain) but id like some actual branded and new tyres this time, not remoulds...plus i found the insa's to be get slipery on wet tarmac. to be honest im leaning towards good year wrangler AT ADV a tthe moment, or the toyo open country AT3

after having them on a td5 and it getting stuck almost everywhere, then taking my terracan on road tyres to the same places and not getting stuck once, i will never have them again...the terracan on road tyres in 2hi dragged an FL2 out that was up to the front axle in a bog, the td5 got stuck just trying to set off on the wet grass on a small slope that scrap fiestas and corsas were flying up on bald tyres.

plus, where can you get brand new BFG for 500 quid?

I've not had any experience of those, but do like General Grabbers AT3 or Cooper Discoverer AT3, had both, currently got the GGs on the Transporter, they have been offroad and do perform well.

Had Cooper AT3s on my Jeep GC, that got used off road and they did really well

My preference is Coopers but they are more expensive and harder to get hold of

hadnt considered grabbers...ive had cooper discoverer MTs and found them a bit harsh on the road but that was on an L200 with wallered out steering components which didnt help.

i will look at the grabbers though

Fair enough. I have them on the 110 and find them excellent. I get about 120k miles out of a tyre too.

As Indy says, the GG ATs are also good. I have them on the D3 because I can't get BFGs in the correct size. Less good on the miles but still a decent tyre and quieter on the road perhaps than the BFGs.

Im looking for some tyres for the 101 currently.

BFG are around 280 a corner
Cooper are 190 a corner
Nan..whatever is is are £150 delivered and fitted.


Ill probably go for cooper. Ive got them on the defender 110 also, but i may go for the cheap Chinese ones, as the rubber will perish on the 101 before i ware it out.

Tbh 500 is tight budget for new.....brands are probably around 600 now at 150 per corner........so pricey I normally wait until I see pairs of good take offs and get those ..got some really nice yokohama ATs recently at 100 each

...and yes, despite them telling me this ages ago, theyre still on their website.


I mailed them, against my better judgment, after the last time i ordered from them, when they initially wanted more money from me for the fuses that they had taken my money for and then said that they didnt have, but the new stock would cost more... (fuses! you would think they would just suck it up??)

...and then they didnt actually send some of them, and took ages to "check their packing line CCTV" before they would deal with the discrepancy.


Loads of posts on landrover forums about them pulling the same sorts of stunts with other people.

I have a set of Yokohama GO15 on the Surf, it's the second full set I've had and I rate them highly. Not sure how good they are off road but they seem fine the couple of times I tried.

Had Yokohama Geolander AT G015 on both my Freelanders. Never got stuck anywhere.

SWMBO has Goodyear Wrangler ATs on her Jimny. Never got that stuck either. However we don't do hardcore off road, thats a different thing altogether.

Look on Camskill tyres website. Great prices. Goodyears have an offer ATM.

Another option is all season extra load car tyres, more road based obviously. I have them on my Combo van, and that has not got stuck either !

So, skewed my view slightly as ive just seen i can get a full set of good year wrangler AT ADV's fitted and balanced for £520 at a local tyre place...which is actually 20 quid cheaper than I can buy them online from most places...I may just go with them as they seem to get good reviews and to be honest, 90% of where I go, I have gone with a fwd automatic jag and only needed pulling out a few times out of the 40-50 attempts, but I couldn't stand the shame of being in any 4x4/awd and still needing a tug because im on road tyres andnots too slippery. The 1 place has a pretty slick slope to get in going down and it can be achallenge to get back up on road tyres...there is a lot of gravel embedded in clay and a lot of leaf debris...its the place I have needed a tug more than anywhere else in the jag as there's no space for a run up at it.

I think the good years will perform well enough

Partly, because they are awesome off road, but also because I did 30,000 miles on a set on my L200 and they still had 4mm+ tread left.

Oh, and some white paint on the writing makes them look even more awesome.

I’ve got a set of cheap tyres on my rav, quiet and they’ve not let me down off road. I’ll check the make out later for you. I run BFGs on my Hilux, they’re ok but exspensive. Had them on my Ranger too and got them taken off, going round damp corners and they would let go. Turned out they changed the compound of the tyres, seem ok now

I get about 120k miles out of a tyre too.

Is that divided by four? If I get 20k I call it a result, to get any more you have to be driving Miss Daisy! I had an RS4 and it took 8000 miles from new to finish on Potenzas. (which weren't all that brilliant to be honest) the Toyo's that replaced them were much better with better wear characteristics.

No. I rotate them, get even wear and replace in sets. 120k miles per set of four. I was doing 25k a year at one point so they didn't get chance to degrade.

Haha. We have very opposite experiences. Goodyears on one of our D2s with 18" rims were terrible. They raised on all the lugs and one type (more road based) were renowned for causing a particularly bouncy ride at certain speeds due to that wear.
