wider is not always good... narrrow means less room for junk

I spent a good hour tidying before I took the pictures of my benches.Love tidy workshops
A breakfast bar is better, if you can find one, they're thicker & wider than ordinary tops.
I once planned big long benches along 2 sides of my old 5 x 6 shop, but a workmate pointed out that they will simply end up full of junk, and I'd end up working on a small area. He was right.
I've got so much "expensive" stuff stashed away. I should sell it but that would involve admitting it's not as expensive as I think."I'm not throwing that out, they're expensive."

I've used scaffold board, kitchen worktop and doors over the years all have worked fine. For my current place i made the workbech units with 18mm ply inserts that can be flipped or replaced and so far works a treat. I do have various half inch plate inserts for whacking things and small welding jobs which saves the ply from heavy abuse.

My workshop has a bench made from a firedoor with formica glued to it, one using 22mm flooring chipboard and a table from Ikea trod on section.
The shed has one made form three fire doors and formica and one made from old pallet parts. The latter was built in an afternoon to suit a purpose.
Outside there's a 300mm x 300mm x 3m chunk of greenheart I found in a skip.
The singular of 'vice' is 'vie', similar to 'dice and 'die'. I mean, nobody would only have one vie would they?
If you don't have oversized benches with loads of 'stuff' on them you miss out on one of life's greatest pleasures. The voyage of discovery which is the grand workshop tidy.
"Bloody hell! I'd forgotten all about that."
"What is that for?"
"That's where it was."
"I'm not throwing that out, they're expensive." (Places said item in a safe place where it remains unused for another couple of years.)
That greenheart is worth a bob or two in that size.
It's a facing from a jetty that was being renovated.
