Spencer, are there paper discs between the wheel and retaining plates and I f so, did they stay intact when you took the wheels off? Adding to what Scott said, check for runout as you would a brake disc as that can give balance problems.

The paper washers act as a cushion between the metal flanges and the uneven wheel surface to create good drive friction. They often come bonded to the wheel during manufacture with the wheel details printed on.

These paper washers have a name and they are called Blotters. More importantly they stop metal to wheel contact and spread the clamp load evenly. Wheels are brittle and metal clamped to something as volatile as a grinding wheel is not good. (Omit reinforced wheels here) before anyone says it.
As wallace says they will help take out any deviation and give a better drive, although quality wheels should not have anything noticeable in this regard.

Never put a wheel on without a blotter. Also make sure you ring test the wheel before mounting, it may save your face!

Your totally correct Scott. And a bad move from myself. Been under pressure latterly with stuff and somtimes find myself slipping on different things I should be on the ball with. But thanks for the information and safety note.

Yes, I have one of them, wheels spin and chip the grinding wheel. The wheels on the dresser soon wear away. I prefer the diamond point one.
Whichever you use, goggles are a must have.

When I worked for British Leyland the star wheel type were standard issue for dressing "off hand grinders", pointy diamonds were reserved for precision grinders.

That's correct hats exactly what they are for and meant to be used in controlled conditions not not by hand, It doesn't mean they wont work but losing a diamond using that way would not surprise me.
