Bench grinder dressing tool

Hi guys.
Can you guys recommend a good quality dressing tool for a bench grinder. My 8inch warco grinder wheels are out of true and making bad vibrations. I had a cheap Clarke dress tool but my grinder made mince meat of it.

I use a cheap diamond dresser from ebay to true grinding wheels.

I was given one of those but have put it somewhere safe, not seen it since.
I have a valve seat grinder and use one of the little bars with a diamond set in
the end to dress stones. I traversed it across the stone by hand but seem to get them pretty staight.

There are flat stone dressers on ebay that may be better. I use the above type cos they fit my wheel dresser, well they do when I have threaded them.

I will get one and try it. Having problems with my grinder. Had it all part today. Checked bearings. Wheel cups. Checked everything. All looks ok. Took wheels of and tried it and no vibrations. Put wheels on and it's awful. It's mounted on its original rubber feet and bolted down. Undone bolts. Tightened bolts up. No different. So I guess the wheels are shot.

Balance the wheels.

You'll need to make up a little stand (on your shaper!) and drill some divots into the heavier side of the wheels.

Apparently there is a balancing kit available called oneway balancing

why buy a dresser when u can use a cheapo 4 inch diamond grinding disk and when it wears out just true up your wheels with it

Check there is not a lot of play between the wheel centre and the spindle/ arbor it should be pretty much a slide fit but not tight. Failing that, check how much run out there is on the wheels with it powered off. Place something on the rest like a pencil and hold firm and rotate the wheel by hand check the runout. For it be as bad as you said the run out will be very noticeable.. its probably a case of the wheel not running true. It really is not necessary to balance any wheel of this diam or mass even on a surface grinder.

Plus i should add, you wont be able to balance it effectively. To do so will require the wheel to have a separate arbor which then mounts on the machine and it doesn't... soooooo

These are still the wheels it came with direct from warco. Had it a couple of years.

Spencer, are there paper discs between the wheel and retaining plates and I f so, did they stay intact when you took the wheels off? Adding to what Scott said, check for runout as you would a brake disc as that can give balance problems.

sometimes taking the wheels off and rotating them a BIT makes it better
