Diesel will not burn on its own. If you throw a match into a bucket of diesel the match will go out.

If it's getting rumbled and tumbled around a lot, it might vapourise to the point it will light.
Never tried it, just guessing.
A sunny day will be better for it anyway.

The guys in a hireshop beside where I worked did it all the time and said it never caused a problem.
Quick flash of a blow torch will get it burning no problem.
One of the funnier mixer mishaps we had brought in was from when the new Peterborough hospital was being built. We had nine Belle mixers , 110 volt & petrol , out on hire to the main contractor , all were less than a month old .
Evidently a guy employed to make specified small batches of mortar was pretty crap at his job and was about to get his cards at end of play that day .
He'd got wind of it and filled the mixer with quick set & gravel , just before he left .
It was rock solid by the time they got it to me on the Tuesday afternoon. I spent every spare minute I had over the next week with a Redhead SDS , 3/4" masonry bit and chisel taking it out . . For my persistence I was given the mixer which was handy as I was just about to start renovating my home .

Just give the dried on mortar/concrete a well placed meaty wallop with a two pound hammer on the clean side of the paddle / bars , most of it comes off without any damage to the paddles or bars .apart from all the cement still stuck on behind the paddles

borrowed mine out and had to use an air chissel to get most of it off without damaging it then shot blasted it out . needless to say no one else will get to lend itLearned my lesson about lending out too, post #16 .it dont come off the paddles where there welded on

I had a s/h belle with a terrible petrol engine in that took more effort to get started than it took to mix stuff by hand, it didnt seem to have a float bowl but used the petrol tank as one, so the fuelling changed as it used the tank so if you half filled the tank it was easier to cold start, and when you heard it spluttering the fuel was getting lower and mixture changing rather than running out.
The paddles had been welded on at some point and the drum had the lump hammer to break set concrete treatment regular from the state of it. Probably when the crap engine threw a tantrum mid job and it was left in disgust. I did this myself a few times too, both the leaving it in disgust and beating the hateful little thing theraputically with a lump hammer to get it to work for just one more job.
Eventually I put a washing machine electric motor on it that you had to plug/unplug to switch it on/off to avoid joins in the wire and switches round wet muck, and it was nicer to live with but still sketchy to use as a result and the belt slipped with a full drum, but it mostly worked, just dont overload or start with a fully loaded drum but add mix as its rotating, which your supposed to anyway. Bonus was it looked so sketchy nobody ever wanted to loan it.
Then someone moved away and gave me their shiny cheapo but not very used mixer that just worked when you plugged it in with no drama, and I didnt need two mixers so now I have a belle full sized argon bottle stand and I probably still have the belle gearbox somewhere on a shelf I cut out the drum. I'd dig it out for someone but the shipping and import nonsense would make it more expensive than a new part.
Hats off to the op for his dedication ressurecting this, but for me lifes too short to keep fettling mixers to keep them working.
