What do you think about multiple passes Paul? Or welding with baby Mig sets?
If the 3mm plate/section/whatever is V prepped both sides you will probably get a decent weld with adequate penetration. Probably a couple of runs both sides depending on angle of the V. Trouble is, if its a baby 90 ampper, it'll probably want a mid-weld snooze before the likkle red light goes off again and it comes back out to play.
I don't think that a 90 amp welder would be able to satisfactorily weld any thicker than 3mm thick, So trying to weld edge prepped 25mm plate with it would never work, the penetration would not be there, and you'd get through a lot of tea.
Incidently, my first welder was a 101 amp Clarke stick welder (A christmas present when i was 14!) It reckoned to be able to burn a 2.5mm rod. I managed to weld 15mm bar that resisted the old favourite hammer test. Then again, stick'll get more pen over same sized mig. I'm tired and rambling now so i'll stop. Yer get spoilt having big sets where you don't have to worry about duty cycles and maximum thicknesses, but then again, i don't have to buy them with my own money!
See you in the brew room Si?
