I’ve been restoring quite a few vices lately for a customer (I’m on number seven now) and the one on eBay has barely been attempted! I’ll hazard a guess and say there’s a fair bit of polished rust on that from wire brushing An actual restoration takes me about a week with paint curing and a full time job factored in.

I've got to admit I don't get "restored" vices . . . it's a tool, to be used for the purpose it was made for. Repair it, replace jaws, maintain it so it works, but otherwise . . .

Each to their own though I guess.

Mine see a wire wheel. Get lubed rebuilt and covered in oil.
Can't see the point in painting it.
Just want to make sure it's clean and working well

lol saw similar on FB marketplace woman selling a hand operated vintage sheep clipping shears , stated nice patina , it must have layn outside for 20 odd year as the blades were koofed, wanted £12 told her she was a crook ,she wasna happy.

I have a 1918 Drummond Model B lathe that I got from my Uncle. It is currently in bits in a box in my shop, awaiting restoration. It will commerce when I get that most elusive of engineering tools, the "round tuit".

My Uncle had it 30 years and bought it from a guy who rescued it from landfill then "restored" it. My Uncle took him at his word, then stored it for a generation and a bit before handing it to me.

The restoration consisted of throwing a can of grey paint at it and then leaving it. When I stripped it, the lead screw nut was sheared and had been like that for 50 years easily. Basically, it was knackered and landfill might have been kinder, in retrospect.

One day I shall have it back up and running just like new.

This is a little OT but kind of relevant -

I had a friend who's workshop always looked spotless. No swarf anywhere. Evreything shiny. He never did any real work in it at all. Which is fine - whatever made him happy.


His rifle barrel was, however, not making him happy. He had detected a very slight curve in it (somehow, I have little idea) so took great effort to straighten it.

Now I have no idea about guns, but I was later told that the bore was put in post whatever had caused the imperceivable (to the rest of us) bend.

So now the outside was flawless, but the bore had a bit of a bend in it...

I don't know what happened then..I don't see him often and wouldn't want to ruin a meeting by asking!

The stuff I'm currently dealing with seems to be bullet proof!

Restoration doesn't mean the end product is an ornament, at all. It means reversing years of abuse and neglect, bringing the machine or whatever it is back to the standards of build and operation that it had originally, or at least as close as possible.

It also means, to me at least, incorporation of modern devices and electronics, where appropriate, to enhance function. An example would be using a vfd to drive a machine motor.

In this way it is possible to ensure that the machine or tool continues to have a useful life and that future generations will get to use it and learn on it.

The opposite of this is of course running a machine into the ground, wiping the crap off it every so often and throwing paint at it once in a blue moon. I know which I prefer.

Then there are other folks that actually use the tools
