Use the tools. Not abuse. Fortunately once the ham-fisted and cack handed have run the tool to the point where their limited skills can no longer get anything more from it, it might just pass into the hands of someone who knows what they are doing.

I've got to admit I don't get "restored" vices . . . it's a tool, to be used for the purpose it was made for. Repair it, replace jaws, maintain it so it works, but otherwise . . .

Each to their own though I guess.

No reason why form, function & appearance can't all be incorporated. Nowt to say a working tool has to look rough.

Indeed, like the old steam engines from mills and factories- polished and painted, functioning flawlessly and something you could be proud to work on too. A guy at my work who is near retirement said to me that when he did his apprenticeship the firm would stop work on Friday at midday and the afternoon was all about cleaning the machines down, making them pristine for work on Monday morning. He reckoned it made a difference too, puts you in the right frame of mind - tidy machines, tidy work.

There are two types of user,

Tarquin and his mates who have a man cave, probably with central heating, plush carpet, comfy sofas etc. They look at the (tools) ornaments

Then there are other folks that actually use the tools

I want a Tarquin workshop!
It will get used though.
I want to be warm in the winter and like my bikes and tools rust free!
Not sure a out a plush carpet though, some off cuts out the skip will do me!

Thing is, if I walk onto an ROV system on a ship and I see a tidy hangar, a well looked after system and decent, well looked after tools, no matter the age of any of it, I'm instantly thinking - these guys know their stuff and they care. I don't need to worry.

If, on the other hand, it's a bag of spanners - then I know I need to be on their case 24/7.
