There's lots of ways of doing things and the best rise to the top. The fabrication industry is tough to compete in and getting things wrong means the difference between making money/Or a loss . There might be someone that will benefit from this post(no pun intended) you'll never get to weld a space rocket if you can't weld a gate post.

Well not in theleast bit concerned. There is countless bad fabrications that deserve highlighting as well as the good stuff. I don't know him or what he does . HI Paul totally disagree with the weld but the bolt is a great idea . Wish you well in your fabrication business . How bout posting some of your fabrications or have you done that already on another post.

No welds do not like stress --repetative movement is bad and the worst the movement or force the more the weld will fail . The welds at the base are large enough and are not exposed to movement or very little. Why the imaginary weld will fail is you clamp the posts together -- let's say clamping force 100 Nm for example . The weld has this force acting upon it straight away and has the addition of repetitive impact forces coming from another dimension adjacent shear. This is why we don't weld stair tread to the stringers. Simple but you get it.
I do find my self looking at fabrication sometimes and wondering why it was left like that, one particular installation that drives me nuts are the access gates into Downing street believe it or not! they were redone and when you go through and look at gates system they do not meet up parallel its pretty poor job and i cringe every time. You would think if your a fabrication firm and win a tender to install a entry system at such a location you would do a damn fine job of it to promote yourself even if they are paying the lowest bidder.
Hate seeing gates with uneven margins either sideif i had to fix it i think it would be straight forward even for me and i a total novice
