from memory to set the pump timing it's dial gauge job into the back of injector pump

in conjunction with cam timing so if cam timing is out it's guaranteed pump will be out.I've checked the timing,
Cyl 1 at tdc, and no 1 cam lobes are flat ,
both valves shut , mark on flywheel is visible,
That is what is worrying me, it should not just be visible, it should be spot on mark.
IRC the cam has a slot across the front for a bar to align with the head face, it can be done by eye, if that is lined up and pump timing ie pulley nut disturbed or not moved when belt was changed it should be close enough
white smoke could also be u/s glowplugs
would have been smoking and rattling before belt change?








BUT,------------- didn't the cam and bearing carriers hurt your back?
