I had heard there's a relatively high rate of asbestosis in teachers but googling it now I can only seem to find sensationalized newspaper articles so who knows.

I heard some Minister on a radio interview a while back, apparently there is a ticking time bomb in the respect that many government/public buildings, have high concentrations of Asbestos within. Schools, Hospitals, Libraries etc and it was only when work was carried out for modern day repairs/Modifications was carried out that they scale of the issue became apparent. As no records were kept of it’s use during construction I think they only actually “know” about 30% of its use in construction.
A friend of mines mother passed away from Abestosis last month. Awfully, she had already had and “beat” breast cancer twice. Then she got the diagnosis in January this year, they knew it was terminal and as such had planned “bucket list” activities, places she’d never visited, things she wanted to do, but then Covid and the lockdown happened and put pay to all that.
On diagnosis the doctor asked where she had worked during the 70’s and she rattled off a few companies. One of the firms was a Kettle manufacturer in the Midlands and apparently a lot of the local related deaths also worked at that place. So it must of been used.

Yeah, all those other substances/aspects you mention are down to mankind messing with the natural world basically.
On one hand some discoveries/inventions have made living/life easier and life span etc go up but is all that the right thing by nature/the planet at the end of the day??

Isn't messing with nature, human nature, as it were? As well as, frankly every other species.
All organisms look to exploit niches, humans are no different in that respect. Where we do differ though is we have the capacity to be conscious about the knock on effects our choices/actions have, rather than relying on evolution to weedle out the stupid ideas.
Essentially, digging asbestos out of the ground is a parallel to a blackbird smashing snails on a rock. Find a useful tool/material/technique - exploit it. It's how we are where we are and is inherent in us and the whole of the natural world.

Don't panic, lads - I don't do ironing [well, very seldom]
Can see why you don't get round to doing much ironing , Pain to put all that ppe on.
My old bosses dad was a pipe lagger, they were covered in the stuff from head to toe, the dust piled up on their shoulders my old boss used to tell me, he died of old age in his late 80's, then you hear of workers wives dieing from putting their fellas overalls in the wash. Bit of a lottery by the sounds of it.

There is a lobby group, well known to us that are stirring things up with not so accurate information
Asbestos, particularly in schools is a highly emotive subject and it’s very easy to stir up tension.
The biggest issue is unscrupulous contractors using non English speaking labour to knock the nine bells out of asbestos in a highly uncontrolled fashion. This is something we see much of

That’s sad. My grandad died of an asbestos related illness. He was a tool maker at a factory that made specialist kit for submarines.
Place he worked at was next door to the largest asbestos factory in West London. It’s long since gone.
Our Epidemiologists keep tabs on what’s going on. Current estimates are that it will be another 10 years before there is a downward trend in disease

The company I worked for offshore preached all day long about safety and PPE, but it was amazing how that all went out the window when we docked in some foreign port and they needed local labourers to clean out tank, go into enclosed spaces, hump and heave stuff etc. Suddenly all the rules were forgotten.....

Yep, I’ve done my fair share of offshore work, all round the world and seen this
One of the current biggest issues is offshore decommissioning
Much stuff, as is is getting floated out to India and Bangladesh where it’s cut up with absolutely no regard for anything

Some of those ship breaking yards are just horrific. Gas axe cutting tons of steel to fall down 20 metres in flip flops and t shirts. All sorts washing away into the ocean. Seems like more European yards are starting to meet decom regs and actually recycle the stuff here in a controlled manner.

One of the best ones is on the Tyne, but who wants to spend lots of money when it can be done cheaper elsewhere

Very true , Don't want all the pesky environmental regulations and health and safety to have to get involved one Europe when you can sub it out to far east .
I think so , think that might be where I am recalling the knowledge from. Or atleast some news video piece I watched.

Few years ago I was quite involved in off shore decommissioning, I was part of a team looking at the Murchison Rig
There were some big numbers and plenty of Zero involved

25,000 ton topside on that rig
Similar weight to this short documentary promotional film I watched not too long ago
Interesting feat of engineering there. Can see the need for elf and saftey there . As they say 40 years ago there was not much planning about how they where going to remove the rigs safely and easily.

There’s some posh new houses built last year with imported stone work surfaces and flooring.
It looks stunning as there is some lovely but fibrous Marbeling. They couldn’t get it to seal, then someone starting asking questions.
Anyway some samples were sent to us and guess what, it’s chrysotile, some of the highest quality naturally pure stuff ever seen by our labs

There was a fire at a skipyard in Sheffield last week, I could see it from home (A couple of miles away), nothing online at the time so I went to see what was going on, roads were already closed by the time I got there but a small crowd had formed, someone was telling me it's where all the construction waste from the city ends up so there's all sorts in there, "could be asbestos". Yer no it couldn't mate.
