Asbestos. Instant death???

I know asbestos is dangerous, or the fine fibres that come off it are, but the way some people react to asbestos you would think it was polonium or plutonium. Years ago people seemed not to care too much about risks, now they overreact to anything that maybe a risk. Me watching an electrician and his mates panic and run out the door after one of them broke a flourescent tube, they thought the gas was going to make them uncle dick.

theres a tiny amount of mercury in them that turns to gas when there lit if or should I say when I smash them in the wheelybin I take a good breath hold it smash em and run back then take deep breaths

That includes burning it too apparently. If you believe in there being a 'god/creator' of this world, I've always thought that that's a pretty twisted thing to do, considering that's all early mankind would have had to have kept warm/cooked food with.

That 2k thread really highlighted the danger, didn't even know what it was before but no chance I'm going anywhere near it now without PPE.

2k will damage your lungs in about 18 months or less.

asbestos isn't an instant death it takes donkeys years before it rears its ugly head

Not always, about 35 years ago a local lorry owner/driver's lad died from asbestosis, he was late teens and used to help his Dad out with servicing the lorry, including blowing out the brake drums with an air line

There is a form of it Crysolite or something like that, it takes very little time to create a growth - lethal stuff.

This week I should have been prosecuting someone who removed large amounts of asbestos with a sledge hammer. The workers cleaned dirty clothing in an office building. The photos showing the trail of contamination are some of the worst I’ve ever seen

It’s gonna be a fun few days when he has his time in court

Nature is an amazing thing though, those trees have that toxicity for a reason, repelling the termites and other insects that would eat them.

father inlaw died of cancer his job was doing brake linings on busses and they allways blew them out with an airline

It was common practice to "blow out" brake drums and gear box bell housings .
The early Datsun brake dust had a sort of chocolate taste to it .
We still use asbestos packing on the steam waggon it is not called asbestos any more .
Heritage packing is the phrase used
I remember the old ironing boards with the asbestos area for the iron to stand on
Asbestos oven gloves were very popular

Best lay off the Talcum powder too. I used to have a big bottle of it for putting in the long rubber gloves at the sandblaster at work, but some talc contains asbestos naturally.

Yes thats right John, i remember that now. My grandmother had an old ironing board with a white pad where the iron sat. Everybody knew it was asbestos, no one seemed bothered though.

That's fine and I totally get that,...is it just another case of us humans becoming far too advanced for our own good then? Anything that's screwed up the balance of natural is our doing basically.

That's what I learnt a very long time ago,..hence why I never even thought of trying to have a go at smoking a fag behind the bike shed at school.

Quite agree but rather bizzare in this modern world of hip trendy folk who are both risk averse and enviromentally aware

Trouble is, it's not quite that simple. Just like the cave men huddled round a smokey fire/using fire to make more foods palatable, there is a trade off. They probably were less concerned about dying in 6months time, than the immediate moment let alone 30yrs time.

That attitude has worked pretty well for us overall, with lots more people living lots longer, healthier lives.

The short-medium termism keeps coming round to bite us though, whether it's asbestos, CFCs, CO2 or any of the others. Some, like CFCs and Leaded petrol are relatively easy to get around by using alternatives without costing much in terms of life/convenience. Others, like CO2 are a lot more tricky. But they all fall somewhere on the scale of helpfulness Vs harm.
