Hello guys, ive done the unthinkable and broke my poor vice.
it was my own fault for being stupid and over doing it a bit , well over doing it a lot realy.
I put a 4ft scaffold bar on the vice and pushed down with all my weight ( fat b****d 171/2 stone) and
of course the vice cracked apart.
Now I have to try and repair the poor thing, ive had it 40 years and my dad had it a long time before I got it , so its a good old girl and be a sin to chuck it away.
I will be pre- heating in a large wood burner ( 50 gallon barrel on its side )
I have seen some people use 7018 rods and some use the Ni Fe type rods .
what is best to use the 7018 or ni-fe ?
My vice is an old record no 3 4 inch vice, what I need to know roughly is how many 2.5mm rods would it take to weld it back together again. 10 , 20 more ?
as you can see its proper broke.
once I know a rough number of rods needed I can think is it worth having a go, or is it too expensive
for what a second hand vice is going to cost me.
I would like to repair it, but sometimes you have to be sensible and look at cost v sentimental value.
plus I am a tight git .
any info will be good
below is a pic of the damage.
