ever tried starting a fire with a magnifying glass ....I'm not following what you mean, unless you mean that UV radiation behind the glasses may scatter back into your eyes?
Plain old glass blocks a significant quantity of UV radiation from passing through, as does polycarbonate and various other clear materials.
They do not provide total "protection" and you can obviously still suffer harm, but if I was going to accidentally look at a huge source of UV radiation I'd rather be wearing plain eye glasses than nothing.
