Anyone used JB Weld?

I want to use it to reattach a snapped hold down eye on a water pump I am restoring. Is it up to the job?

I don't know with any accuracy but would guess no, I used it to fill a hole in a drill table, it worked for that but I also rebuilt an edge on an alloy pulley and whilst shaping it after it had set the lump fell off.

I double cleaned and reapplied, initially thought it had worked but it did the same after a day and it's not on a part of the pulley where the belt touches.

I don't think I was asking more of it than what they advertise, in fact I thought it was the perfect task for it's claimed uses.

Could the mating surfaces have been 'deeply' contaminated, esp if as you say it was an alloy [aluminium]?

hmmm, it had never been near oil and was soaked in acetone overnight, can't guarantee it was not contaminated but as clean as I could get.

I have used it to repair none load bearing stuff.

Never had it work 100% were a thread was involved.

I would not recommend it for loaded situations. Having said that the slow drying stuff is superb the rapid one not as good. same applies to Araldite.

Ive never had any kind of success with putty metal...keep that kind of stuff for mending metal ornaments that are just ornaments.

I wouldn't.
I've used it in the past to attach nuts to make them captive (pre welder days!) and they just detached with moderate pressure, in fact, standard epoxy/Araldite was more successful.

I use it for sticking splitting maul heads back onto fibre glass handles. Lasts a couple of years before I have to renew it. Pretty tough stuff

Ok thanks all. Think I'll give it a go as I've already ordered it and If it fails I will rethink it.

I wouldn't use JB weld in your application, but I have used it to make the inlet ports on a cylinder head smaller

if its made of ally use technoweld with a blowtorch

thats what I'd try and do too,as long as there arn't any seals/bearings that will get damaged by the heat

a few years ago I used lumiweld (or a similar alloy) to make a new plenum for an inlet manifold

done that trick quite a few times.

in quite a lot of lowley motorsport classes your not allowed to remove material from the cyl head, no one ever said you chount make the ports a better shap with stick stick tho

I used it to fix the lid on a senser for a church, but within a week it had come clean off. Don't think it liked the heat of charcoal very much

Well that's what I call bravery - if any of it breaks off it's going straight to the valves, piston etc...

its a spare engine, its been in use for about 8 years now without any issues, the original engine is tucked away in a shed just in case it self destructs

JB Weld, used by TYA

Yesterday I used JB weld o fill a hole in a Bakelite handle.
See my post on a Startrite band saw. The handle had split and the thread striped.

This morning I removed the binding holding the spilt.
Drilled and Taped the hole to 1/4 Whit.
Well it seamed to have worked. Time will tell.

There are sections for TIG welding of aluminium and there are sections for projects made out of aluminium, perhaps if you provide more information it would help decide what goes where.
