anyone run a home dehumidifier?

Ive an ancient wood effect vinyl finished ebac that I bought from the loot newspaper second hand 20 odd years ago. I run it in the garage on a timer as the humistat thing doesnt work. In winter when its damp it needs emptying twice a week. If I forget for a day or two you can feel the damp in there

That's the type I have in the shed. I mate gave me it around '89; he owned it for a long while before then. Weighs a ton and noisy. But if you want to dry a room out, nothing beats it.
You find the older (and better IMO) type at the dump. Thinking about it, I have 5. The other 3 are out on 'loan'. The one we use in the house is made by Hitachi very quiet.

No need for one in the house once the stove is lit.

I’ve had one in the garage, permanently dripping thru a pipe to the outside, for years. It’s been fantastic and I rarely have to worry about rust on the tools.

Also got a £50 job currently running in the bathroom as we battle the results of a roof leak - empty a pint out of it every day or so.

Me too, I put it on around Nov, off in March/April. Stops everything turning brown.
We have one in the house, occasionally in the motorhome too. If the weather is clear better to open windows though, but in wet west wales those days are rare in the winter.

just started using our dehumidifiers again can get a couple of gallons a water a week out of house and keep the humidity about 50 percent

Yeah I got an Ebac one - donkeys years old - tank drain is piped outside using 6mm bore airline pipe.

But yes these things suck loads of water out of the atomsphere...

I have a Meaco Arete left on all the time in the workshop. I set it to 65 & leave it to do its thing. A larger Arete in the flat for drying laundry.

Ebac..not sure if they still do but offer an extended warranty if you buy from them direct.
Also they offer a fixed price repair if under ten years old which the missus has used twice whilst running about 12 of these at various locations full time

This has come up before. I will not have one in the house again after the one we had caught alight. I certainly would not leave one unattended.

i dont see the point in them unless you can seal the room or house up where they are used as thats when they come into there own

as goes for damp its caused by us and how we do our day to day stuff

eg showers, baths using dryers, food cooking anything that can cause damp in the house

a warm house to cold walls is the main culprit and thats because your house walls havent warmed up this is caused around now as the temps shift and we start warming the house walls up ready for winter

flash heat is another cause of it where only the room air gets hot and hits cold internal walls
flash heat is also caused by long time off periods of central heating 8hrs + off time during work hrs and then you come in to a cold house so you fast heat the house cooling it down for bed and coming on in a morning you can cancel that off by allowing the c/h to come on once during the day so it dosnt allow the house walls to go back to flat cold again

alternative to that is fit insulation to the inside of the walls then the warm air wont hit cold walls

tiled bathrooms are the worst for flash heat hitting flat cold tiles

My garage one is a Hotpoint, wood effect tin, but I’ve seen them badged differently. In 30 years I’ve only had issues with the fan motor bronze bush - strip clean and lube sorts it (twice). I can’t fault it.

Yep. Mothers house, which my dad built, used to be bone dry. Now cracked walls, badly fitted upvc windows, and bloody fluffy cavity wall insulation have all caused issues, hidden until now.

interesting topic, most everyone I know "over here" has one, in their basement.
My parents went thru a few of them over the years, it's not uncommon to find them out for the trash.

I stopped using it when I bought their house, and installed an 8" duct fan, with duct to the basement floor.
It runs 24/7/365 and seems to work just as well. It also get's rid of the musty smell that the de-humidifier did not.
The power draw is much less.

no it cant be its down to what is used we have houses older than most of your homes and they dont suffer from damp unless its caused by other issues

the older houses are meant to breathe lime plaster allows this the use of bonding and plaster seals a wall and dosnt allow the rom to breathe anymore double glazing seals a property up even more removal of a chimney removes the draft through the property

all caused by bad installations all trying to improve what should be left alone fair enough with upvc windows though

a cavity is just that it stops outside walls allowing water to travel from them to the inside walls fill them expect sooner or later for it to wick through to the inner wall all caused by not renewing the pointing on the outside caused by traffic vibrations and earthquakes that have now cracked the outside seal

thats because you have brought back full air movement within your property

you can use an hrv for air swapout and heat recovery also known as an air heat exchanger

Rising damp and leaky roofs, etc, don’t exactly come under that umbrella statement.

leaky roofs are down to the owners remit to repair its structure back to a sealed state if they dont then they are the cause

the roof and walls are to be maintained like everything else its owners dont want to spend that money on it as it looks fine not an issue

as goes for both matt and the rising damp comment well thats down to drainage we have created pathways that now block water escapage or to be drained away we havent even fitted a french drain to help out and drain the land close to the house property walls

fit that and i bet you dont get much rising damp

as goes for the old tar sand damp coarse like everything else it does fail that also comes into maintanence of the property vut can be remedied by fitting in a french drain

we have the same issue here on an older than 1700 house and when i had the chance to fit a french drain in the property i didnt fit one when i had all the flags up for a new relay of them

Yup, leaky 123 year old farmhouse, I only shut it off when below 20f
I bought the above pictured air-to-air for my sister, I don't know if it got installed.
