Anyone remember?

Was looking for an old thread I saw on here a long while back.

I think it was based around preventing corrosion in birmabright Land Rover panels.

Any way a special paste was mentioned in it that is used on aircraft that seals the stainless rivets off from the aluminium skin and prevents/slows corrosion. Can anyone remember the thread or what the paste was?

I wouldnt be using Stainless Steel hardware. Zinc dipped is far better. Been closer together on the Galvanic index.

why not alloy , you can get them ready painted too and that helps [ Rivets }

The body on a LR is held by around 10 bolts. I wouldnt want to use a non Tensile bolt to do that

sorry , thought it was for rivets ,, yep I make a lot of little plates for outrigger mounting repairs ,, i use a bit of oil can [ well the plastic gallon can oil comes in now , ] cut up to make thin washers and put them between the metal and the alloy and a washer under each of the outer washers too , use mudguard washer where I can and they are not seen ,,, bit of silicone sealant on the bolt and do the lot up ,,, if it does any good or not Ive no idea , I add a squirt of ACF at the end anyway , not as slow as it sounds when your in the swing of it all ,,, and ive not had any come back so cant be that bad ,,, its the way they do ships .

Thanks very much, not needing it for a Land Rover this time on a ship that has brass port holes screwed by stainless screws into an aluminium super structure. Hopefully this will slow some of the problems we have been having. We may be able to change the screws to brass but it all depends on classification approval.

I was told many years ago never to use brass with aluminium because of mutual corrosion, was that wrong?

Not wrong. The naval architect screwed up basically when the thing was built. But because of all the regulations it’s very very difficult to change it have to get classification approval and that’s very expensive.

It’s asphalt based. So good for aluminum. MIL SPEC too.

I bought a tube as I commonly replace alot of trashed rusted cap bolts on classic mercedes with A2 Stainless. I use anti seize to coat them but this stuff may offer better protection against dissimilar corrosion. However I will take that risk over having to weld all the bolts out again in the future. Hopefully not in my lifetime

That's what I thought but I have to dig a solid plug of hard yellow out of the tube most times I use it.
I get it off ebay as it's cheaper than my local bearing shop.

I've never heard of Duralac, so was curious as to how it might work. Looking at the Safety Data Sheet, it contains 10-30% barium chromate and a trace of a cobalt compound. Chromates are generally regarded as a bit nasty these days (I think chromate paints are pretty hard to find) and the SDS lists it as acutely toxic. So, by all means use it, but don't get it on your skin, and even less so, on your sandwiches .

If anyone wants to read up on corrosion and galvanic effects, the most reader-friendly book on the subject is called "Rust and Rot (and what to do about them)" by R.M.E Diamant. It dates back to the early 1970's, and some of it is a bit out of date, but worth having; copies on ebay for £2.02 inc postage .

Oh is that the stuff you use to wipe tools down with so they don’t rust? Here it’s pretty good and lasts about 2 years.
